Need suggestions....crib "bumpers"...HELP PLEASE

Ask:
Ok, so my 8 month old, who does not pull herself up yet, still had her bumpers in her crib. I just figured I would leave them there since she wasn't using them to climb or anything. Well, yesterday morning, I went in to get her, and she has started moving around a lot when she sleeps, so her head was underneath the bumper against the side of the crib. Of course I freak out that she could choke herself, so I remove the bumper immediately.

Well, now, like I said she moves around a lot, so now she is getting her foot or her hand through the slats in the crib and of course getting upset. HELP!! What do I do?? I don't want to put the bumper back in.

Any suggestions????
Answer:

According to what our ped. told us, you are not suppose to put those bumpers on the cribs as they can choke. I had used the bumper until DS#1 2-month checkup, and the doc asked me if I used bumpers and I said ofcourse (the whole crib set DOES include it and it looks cute), and she told me not to use it anymore. I went home and took it out. Didn't use it at all for DS#2. Check with your ped.

Here's a little read until you can get with your ped:

Answer:

I never used crib bumpers!!! They are dangerous!!! I bought one for my oldest, used it a very short time, and like you, walked in once and found her with her head under the bumper!!! Threw it away!!! Never used one for the next 6 kids or grand kid! Also, we were not allowed to use them in the daycares I worked in. I say, I would rather deal with her foot hanging out than her suffocating herself!!!

My DD had the same problem with the crib slats--they weren't too big or anything, she just weasled her way in between them. But I left the bumpers off and eventually she just learned to not stick her little hands and legs in there.
Answer:

I use and still use the bumbers. I tie them on and tuck them halfway down the mattress all the way around. I took them out once to find my baby got his thigh stuck, and another time had a big egg on his head from hitting it on the rails.
Answer:

I used them for all of my kids until they came out of the crib. Something to consider is to maybe make extra ties for them, both top and bottom, and secure them tighter to the crib bars. I did this with my last child, mostly because of her breaking a few ties by standing on them. I tried NOT using the crib bumper, but I didn't like them hanging out, either, and also mine took pacifiers, which fell out without the bumper pads in.
Answer:

Babies R Us have breathable crib bumpers that are supposed to allow air to circulate in the crib and keep little arms and legs from poking out. They are also supposed to kind of collapse when baby steps on them if they start using them as a boost to help them climb out of the bed. I haven't tried them yet - I was thinking of getting one for DD's crib, but she hasn't gotten her arms/legs stuck that much yet.

I didn't even know what a bumper was until Kat was like 11 months old. By then the little monkey was all over her crib and I had the same problem as other mommas, arms and legs slipping out of the slats. We converted her crib to a toddler bed a couple months ago, and I've still got the bumper attached on three sides. It's saved us a lot of heartache, methinks.

Being an avid sewer, I couldn't wait till it was MY turn to have a beautiful baby crib set....and guess what.....I didn't make bumper pads!
Not trying to scare anyone but the SIDS foundation does not recommend using bumper pads. Our neice died at 10 1/2 months due to SIDS, so we took every precaution we could.
DS's arms and legs poked out a couple of times, but he learned quickly not to do it.
After talking to my Mom I realized that bumpers weren't used "in the old days", and we all lived.
Answer:

I used bumper pads with my first and they were a royal pain whenever I needed to change the crib sheet. I read the SIDS warning before I had my second and never used them again (got rid of them in fact). Sure, he got his legs stuck in the crib slats a couple of times, but I went in and pulled them back out and everything was fine. It happens occasionally now but it's no big deal.
