Ask:
Well, I have finally requested that my oldest son be referred for speech/language therapy. Thanks ladies, because without you I don't think I would have done it.
After Desertmoms thread about What do you do with a Talker... it made me realize I need to have my son's stutter evaluated. I don't know if it's an actual stutter, if he's nervous and just can't get the words out smoothly, if he just can't get his thoughts organized before he starts speaking... but I asked his teacher if it happens at school. She told me, yes, mostly when he answers questions aloud in class.
I have sent in the paperwork to have an eval done. I am soooooo curious to see what the therapist says/recommends!!!!!
<<sigh>> I am glad to have the ball rolling I guess. This stutter has been around so long, I just assumed he'd outgrow it. <<sigh>> Kids can really be exhausting.
Answer:
Hope it works out for you!!! I haven't had a stutterer, but I do have 2 that receive speech therapy and it is wonderful!!!
Answer:
Yes, kids are an adventure, aren't they? They cause our minds to expand in ways we never imagined. Congrats on doing this - it's helping my son.
Answer:
My 9 year old DS also is dysfluent. He has good and bad "stages".
Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!
Answer:
I hope you can get the help for him that he needs! I know how much of an emotional tug of war that can be - whether to do the eval or not. My DS had issues with speaking when he was first learning to talk and we had him evaluated and they told us he was borderline so it was up to us if we wanted to do therapy or not. I'm glad we did, even though it was only for a few months. His language skills are still not what I would expect at this age, but he is doing much better being around all english speaking people (we lived in Turkey for a while) and I know a lot more now as far as what to look for, how to help correct it, etc. With something like this, knowledge really is power so good for you for taking the first step!! Let us know how it turns out!
