Are the rooms in your home done by THEMES, COLORS, or NO REAL PLANNING?

Ask:
Mine are done by color for the most part...but I don't necessarily have a color flow going. My living room is khaki/hunter green/maroon, but my den is cream and blacks. The kids' rooms are all done according to their likes. I did themes in nurseries, but after that, they change too quick for me to put the money into a themed room!!! I think the only themed rooms in our house is a duck bathroom for the kids and my bathroom (which is gigantic!) is safari-ish! I love elephants, so I have elephants here and there, with several gorgeous elephant prints hung...but then have the safari theme (leopard and zebra print) candles, etc. placed around to break it up some. I love it. I have had it like that for over a year..and I was looking at it today, thinking that it still "fit" me.

Well, it's seems I have more shabby than chick (sp??) going on here lately. I have a few rooms done to my liking, but the living room and play room are just a mish mosh of used things that I am trying to make work. The dining room and the living room/toy room have a deep teal carpet with dots and flowers on it. It was here when we bought the house. I found the carpet at home depot and it is Milicon, very good quality and expensive. It's hard to decorate around it, but I don't have the money to replace such a huge area with anything comparable. I'm not sure how I'm going to decorate around it. I have natural colored country ruffle curtains on my windows, I'm thinking of doing sage on the walls too...I dunno

I am partial to green, it makes me happy. My kitchen walls are a sagey green and is decorated in harvesty colors. My bedroom and master bathroom is done in a slightly darker green, including the ceilings (looks cool!) and cream. My dining room is done in mannor white. I painted on old hutch mannor white too and left the counter part wood color, it came out great. Next I'm going to paint the table to match it.

The kids room is done like a mural including their dressers (they disappear into the walls because they are painted to match). I love their room.

I have a canteen green walls in living room and kitchen-they are open to each other-- brown furniture with red area rug and green pillows, one wall in kitchen red with my americana on it. My whole house used to be this---now I have lots of grandbaby pics--but I love anything old and antique utinsils especially red to decorate with. One daughter has a Little Mermaid theme--EVERYTHING, While the other has cherrys --pink walls and I stenciled cherries everywhere.
Answer:

our home currently is done in...1976 whatever...Paneling on EVERY WALL (I mean every wall - kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms inside all the closets - everywhere). We plan to pull down and re-do this spring/summer and so far I would say it will be done by color. I don't really collect anything to have a "theme" per se. We are planning on a creamy yellow for the dining room, with a coordinating tanish for the living (they are open to each other). For the kitchen I have tile the previous owners placed that I like (it's kinda a dark turquoise with rustish color accents) , so I am pulling from that making it more of a lighter cabinet (prob. white-ish) with more tanish - rustish countertops. Our issue is that the entire house (short of bed, kitchen, and dwnstrs bath) has thick red-violet shag carpet. It is really ugly, but in great shape, and we will prob. keep some of it, just because there are other things our money needs to go to other than carpet. I figure I can accent the rooms with things that will tie the walls and carpet together. Maybe ??
