Ask:
My daughter gags on anything but stage 2 food. I tried to make her food but she is so picky I gave that up. She is content with most of the gerber organics stage 2 now but that is all she eats. She will also eat cheerios, rice krispies, and gerber stars, banana cookies. Has anyone else had this expereince? I try to get her to try table food and she has nothing to do with it. I've been trying since about 10 months.
Answer:
Have you talked to her pediatrician about it to find out if there may be something preventing her from eating regular solid food (or if she simply prefers the taste and texture of baby food)?
Personally, I've known two children who had issues eating solid foods. One I believe had a really strong gag reflex (I think her parents eventually worked through it but it took her awhile before she was eating anything but baby food) and the other has issues with not knowing that she has to chew her food before she swallows it. Basically whenever she is given something solid to eat she will automatically try to swallow without chewing, therefore choking and gagging. She's getting therapy to help teach her how to chew before she swallows.
Answer:
I did ask the pediatrician about it at her 1 year visit but he blew it off because she is growing like a weed and is 90% for weight and 110% height. He said he'd worry about if she isn't eating solids by 3 years old.
She does chew dry foods like cereal and crackers but won't eat anything else. She pushes it around and spits it back out.
I will ask about it again at her visit next month.
Thanks for your reply

I have no experience, but I wonder what she would do it you mix something in with something she already likes to kind of transition her?
Answer:
I think you are kinds lucky. At least you know she is getting what she needs nutritionally. My dd is 14 months as well and eats just about everything we do just cut up tiny. If I were you I would keep on giving her the babyfood but put the table food on her tray as well keep offering to her and one day she'll try it. The main thing is that she's eating healthy right?
Answer:
Maybe I am mean, but since you know she can eat table food, that is what I would give her. She is not going to starve. She will eat it if she is hungry. Just keep giving her a variety of foods.

I don't think you are mean. That is what I would do. But everyone is different.

Thanks for your suggestions. I do put things on her tray, the dog really appreciates it. She pushes them off. I'll keep trying, hopefully I won't be packing gerber in her lunchbox for kindergarten
Answer:
My dd was the same exact way! She would gag horribly with Stage 3 foods and even now at almost 3, if something is too thick, she gags and spits it out. I am the same way, and there isn't anything wrong to prevent her from eating them, she just doesn't like them. I started with table food because of this and she did well with it, not eating at first, more like exploring with it, but eventually I just weaned her to one or two jars of stage 2 to make sure she was getting something, and then when she would have no more of it, it was on to all table food. I wouldn't worry, she sounds like she is growing and healthy, so just let her guide the way!

Thank you for your reassurance. She has recently starting eating gerber banana cookies and I'm pleased with that.
