Fever but no other symptoms-is this weird?

Ask:
I have a first-time Mom question. My ds woke up from yesterday's nap with 102.7 fever but no other cold symptoms. He still played and ate okay. I gave him some Tylenol. Around 10:30 last night, he woke up and was running 103.6. I know its probably not reason to panic but I did call our clinic's nurse line and they advised Tylenol, which I gave. He is a little better this morning, back down to 102.3. Still eating okay and lightly playing. Is it weird that he's showing no other cold symptoms? Or is the bottom getting ready to drop out?
Answer:

My oldest daughter would do that and would have UTIs. My younger is the happiest kid in the world but when she cries and whines, I know it's an ear infection. I'd make an appointment with the dr. It can't hurt! I always get nervous with the high fevers.

My children did that with Fifth's disease. They'd have a fever but no other sym, but then a few days later they'd break out in the tell-tell "slapped cheeks" rash. That's one of the reason that fifth's disease is so contagious, because it's contagious when they have the fever but no other symptoms, so lots of times people will still send their kids to school because they don't seem sick. My 3.5 year old is going through this same thing right now. He had a slight fever two days ago...then yesterday it was about 103.4. He's playing and eating fine. He has started a cough now.

He was exposed to a nasty cold/virus/flu thing last week. Those kids had the fever, cough, headache and some were vomiting. He so far has only gotten the cough and fever. I'm hoping that's where it ends.

I would switch to motrin every 8 hours and rotate the tylenol every four hours. It seems to keep the temp down better t hat way.

Anyway i don't think you should worry. He could come down with other symptoms but hopefully he won't.
Answer:

Roseola (sp?) is another rash that appears a few days after having a fever with no other symptoms.

It definitely would hurt to make a dr appt. It could also be an ear infection. My dd would never be fussy when she had an ear infection. My ds was a different story. I always knew right away.
Answer:

My son has had a number of high fevers with NO other symptoms (not even symptoms that showed up after a few days). My pediatrician doesn't want to see him unless he's had a fever for at least 3 days...by then any other symptoms would probably show up and diagnosis would be easy (and if it's viral there's no treatment anyway). If the fever continues without symptoms beyond 4 or 5 days, then they start wanting to draw blood to look for an infection. If the tylenol is bringing the fever down, he's hydrated, and still eating and playing okay, I would just watch and wait (and maybe call your pediatrician to let him/her know what's going on).

I think that you start to learn your child and get this gut instinct. This however, only comes with time and experience. I know with my older one he would act horrible with and ear infection...my younger would be fine and just a little fussy going to bed. I would call the doctor's office and see what they say.... I guess I am a little more conservative when it comes to health issues and I tend to err on the side of caution especially when they couldn't verbalize alot of things. When my older one had a high fever (over 102) the MD's office told me that they would want to see him if he had it for 3 days.

Thanks everyone for your good advice. DS's fever has gradually gone down over the course of the day and last time I checked, it was 101.5. He has eaten, played, and is napping now. The doctor's office said to call back if he goes 24 hours with a fever and for now to treat with Tylenol if necessary. Since his fever was so much lower, I didn't give him any because I just hate the thought of overmedicating. Hopefully, he will be doing well after he wakes up.

I'm sure you experienced Moms know this already, but it is so easy to take the healthy happy days for granted!

Oh, and I did notice his nose starting to run just a tiny bit this afternoon.

I always chalk up the fever w/no symptoms to teething as teething brings on a fever sometimes not to mention crankiness! Glad he's doing better!

This was my thought too. How old is your son? DD #1 always got a fever and runny nose when she was teething. Nothing a little tylenol can't fix.
