I was talking to my hubby last night and mentioned that I was going to try to get potty chairs via FreeCycle or at least at the second hand store. He was grossed out and said that we should buy new ones!
I told him that they would be cleaned top to bottom first, and even sterilized in the dishwasher but he didn't like the idea. I asked him what was the difference between this, and using a toilet in a hotel or in the house that we moved in, and he wasn't buying it.
Would you get your potty seats second hand?

It would depend on how much I was saving versus just buying a new one on sale. Ones I've seen at Once Upon a Child look clean and it should be fine it you wash it like you said.

For me personally, I don't buy anything second hand that has anything to do with or touches private parts. (underwear, bras, swimsuits, a potty, cloth diapers, etc) It may just be me ... I have germ-a-phobe issues ... be interesting to see what others say. I just can't take the thought of washing someone else poo in my dishwasher. No offense. I have issues.

IMO...using second hand potty chairs, drinking cups, sheets...and everything inbetween... is no different than using a public bathroom, eating/drinking at a restaurant, and sleeping in a hotel. We all do it. So...we use anything we can get second hand.

I hate to use public restrooms! If you do buy a potty chair 2nd hand disinfect it but not in the dishwasher where food goes.

I got my potty chair and seat at a yard sale. I just wiped them down with bleach water.
I wouldn't put a potty chair in the dishwasher...that just seems gross to me.
I will never buy used underwear or bras. I only buy shoes at yard sales that look like they have never been worn for dd...I don't buy used shoes for myself or dh. I bought infant socks at yard sales for dd when she was born, but I wouldn't buy them now.
I think that's about it! I will buy most things second hand if I can.

As far as the potty seats I don't know. I'm sure they would be fine once you really cleaned them but I would likely buy mine new. I also don't buy under wear or swimsuits used. I'm sure there are others but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Ya the dishwasher thing grossed me out when I started to think about it. I'm sure if I scrubbed it outside with hot water, soap and bleach it would be fine.
