Do you have squirrels? My MIL never gets any ripe tomatoes b/c her squirrels steal them while they're green!
Answer:

i'm an awful gardener but i always look at the little seed packet stuff comes in to see when the best time is to plant in the ground. i know my dad usually has to cover his from time to time becasue he'll have them all going then a frost comes.
Answer:

Yup I have squirrels. But I have bird feeders up and they don't even bother those!!
Answer:

I've always done tomatoes from plants instead of seed. Our golden retriever watches the tomatoes diligently and as soon as they are the slightest bit red, she steals and eats them. I think I'm going to have my husband wire up an electric fence this year to keep her away from them.
Answer:

WHAT kind of tomatoes do you get?? Where do you get them?? Whats the best kind to grow?

I don't eat tomatoes but my dh does, and he eats them like they are going out of style. I need to grow LOTS!
Answer:

I haven't done tomatoes in a while but I've just done planting small plants. It certainly can be cheaper to start them at home inside but I've never had the patience for that...

There are tons of good books out there, so maybe hit your library and do some research on your area, your soil, varieties you'd like etc

ENJOY!

Answer:

I plant mine in june here, and I buy them from pamida, I get beef steak and some cherry tomatoes. I used to start from seeds but that is to much work for me know.
Answer:

If memory serves, it's best to start them in the house 6 weeks before you want to plant them outside....here in Wisconsin, I usually plant my garden during the week after Memorial Day (if it's warm enough) but that gives you a rough idea of when to plant.

You could ask your DH if he knows what kinds he likes....but if he's like mine he doesn't have a clue! lol! I usually get the plants from a greenhouse already started (but I see that you want to start your own....) Hardware stores or walmart will have seeds. I haven't had an issues with walmart seeds, but the seeds I get from Menards always seem to do better for some reason....maybe it's just what I'm getting, too. Anyway, one or two plants will give you more than enough tomatoes to eat if that's all you're planning on doing with them. If you want to can them, then 3 or 4 plants would probably be enough...
