Ask:
I bought an herb pot and seeds at Aldis because I have really wanted to grow at least basil. The pot is like a strawberry pot and I planted basil and parsley in the main part and chives and something else (I can't remember) in the side holes. There wasn't much in the way of instructions (what do you expect for 7.00 at Aldi's?) but it said to keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate but not wet because the seeds will rot. I was having to spritz it several times a day so I put the whole pot in a ziploc bag to create a greenhouse effect and it seems to be keeping it moist now.
Is there anything else I can do to get the seeds going? What do I need to know about growing herbs once they sprout?
Answer:
You can set it in a warm window...do you have one with southern exposure? That'll help because the soil will be warm. Once it's going, you just have to pick them and it'll keep producing for you. Occassionally, if you keep the pot going for a while you could fertilize it with a good fertilizer that's made for herbs or veggies, but I wouldn't worry about that too much til it REALLY gets going. Good luck and ENJOY!!

You got this at Aldi's? I will have to look for it. Can you freeze the herbs if there is to much to use right away?

I've seen the set she's talking about at our Aldi's, too. They look kinda nice. And yup, the herbs are able to be frozen if you can't use them all right away....or, dehydrate them if you have enough.....

Do you have to do anything to them for freezing?
Answer:
Herlbs can be frozen but you have to blanch them. Get and ice cube tray , blanch the herbs for about 1 to 2 minutes then put 1 tsp in each cube and add afew drops of water to cover the herbs and freez. When you are ready to use it just pop one out of the tray and thrwoit in the jpot, it will melt in a few seconds. or you could just dry them by hanging them upside down and storing in a jar.
