Ask:
Has anyone ordered flower bulbs from a catalog or from an online site? I have always bought mine from the gardening center or gotten them as splits.
Is there one (site or catalog) you have had luck with? And did you try spring bulbs or fall bulbs? What varieties?
I am thinking about trying an order from Breck's.
Answer:
ACtually my kidsa re selling some right now. I hadn't planned on buying any, but I did like the looks of the strawberry thing. It comes with the seeds AND the pot to plant them in. And growing some fresh strawberries would be fin!
Answer:
I have ordered from several companies, I think Breck's was one of them. I use Stark for trees and grapes. They have all been very good. A little tip about flower bulbs, the bigger the bulbs, the bigger the flowers. I plant them in the fall. A good thing about ordering them through the catalog is that they will send them at the time when they should be planted.
Answer:
Thanks treehugger. I was looking at the catalog tonight and am excited to place an order. They have a deal where you can get $25 off any order (if your order is less than $25 then it's free ~ it says?) so I thought it would be a nice time to try it. I don't know if that is standard or not.
Thanks also for mentioning Stark - I haven't heard of them but am interested in taking a look. We are looking at planting several fruit trees this spring/summer too.
Answer:
Just wondering, you can plant fruit trees in MN?? It is not too cold. I have no idea what I can plant here in Iowa. My planter was over grown with weeds because I did not know what they were. I know California weeds, but not Iowa weeds! I guess I should start this in another thread... because I definitely need HELP!
Answer:
There aren't many but you can grow them. Apples, Pears, and Plums are at the top of my list so those are the only ones I have looked into. If you follow a zone map for trees or go to your University Extension service they should give you advice on what fruit trees you can grow (or at least where you can find it). We are only about 15 miles from the Iowa border, so being farther south we have a few more options than the north.
Answer:
I'm in the twin cities and I had apples and plums in my back yard. the dear got the plum tree. poor thing never stood a chance. the apple tree we had to get rid of (too close to the house) when we added on to the house.
edited to add: forgot we also had grapes, sorry thats not a fruit tree.
