Ask:
Is it just me or are birthday parties a little out of hand these days. Is this all over the country or just in Urban areas?
I just attended a 1 year old birthday party that was like a wedding! They had live music, a banquet, costumed characters, fancy balloons and a video slideshow (real epic considering the little guy is 1 year old).I was absolutely astonished at how much money these folks spent. It had to be easily $20k. The balloons alone were over a grand.
It was super fabulous and all but it really is a burden for the guests. If you go, your expected to at least cover your plate and if you don't go, your offend people (especially for family which was my case). I ended up giving $100 which is rather outrageous to me for a 1 year old birthday party. The best part is my MIL had a fit when she thought we were giving $150! She said we are being cheap and that we need to give at least $200 to cover our plates (she thinks we gave 200 in the end).
I mean really, it's nice that you want to have a fancy party and all, but don't expect me to pay for it. And I was super excited that I got party goods on clearance and spent a total of $38 (bought a TON of paper goods for my little guys upcomming first birthday).
Boy are they going to be shocked when they attend my babie's BBQ pool party this summer
Answer:
oh wow that's pretty fancy for a 1 year old. i agree totally, all i'm gonna do is get matching paper plates and napkins and party favors for whatever character my ds is into at 1 if he's even into a character. lord i just don't have that kind of money to spend on a party that he'll probably not remember.
Answer:

That is insane!! "A fool and their money are soon parted". Very crazy.
Answer:
That is crazy to pay that much money for a party the baby will never remember. Oh and how dare they think the guests should bring such expensive gifts and pay for a plate......i would never have gone no matter if i was related or not.
Answer:
That is insane! I cannot even fatham the idea of spending that much on a one year old. I do not even think that I have spent that much on my kids their WHOLE lives!! Ridiculous!!
Although I do know that certain cultures have different ways of looking at celebrations. But that is still a lot of money!
Answer:
my dd gets to invite a few friends for a party but thats it, and we do a family party with cake and presents and that is it. same for ds, except he is to small for friends so we just do the family party with cake and presents. i maybe spend 20-30 on his birthday in total, and thats if i buy a cake. if i make the cake i spend maybe 15 not including the present. i think large over the top birthdays are just another way to show off or to try to keep up with the jones.
Answer:
I would have gone and still only spent 20 on a gift.
