Ask:
This is a great discipline method that dh and I are being "trained" in right now with our children, but especially the two oldest who are both special needs due to emotional/behavioral disorders. I'll be the first to admit that we are "yellers"...we do ALOT of talking and it almost always escalates to yelling out of frustration on our parts, which, we all know is useless and doesn't help a darned thing! This method uses very minimal talking and keeps everyone calm. It uses a time-out for the child and a reverse time out period for the parent. I've seen parents count kids off before, but this is much better than just the threat, "if I count to 5 and you are still misbehaving, you're in big trouble"...which I've been guilty of too. We are members of a Family Support Group through the agency where they receive therapy and the leader of the group spoke on it the other night at our meeting and he'll also be coming into our home to teach us how to effectively use it. If you want to learn more about it, you can buy the book/check it out at the library or you can Google it online...just type in 1-2-3 Magic.

Thank you for this. I'd like to learn more...

Someone on here recommended the book awhile back, and I picked up a copy at our library. It's truly been wonderful for my oldest dd! I noticed immediate improvement in her behavior. I tend to get a bit impatient at times too, esepcially with the badgering behaviors, so now I just count each time she continues badgering (or any of the other undesirable behaviors), and it's made such a difference. I tend to stay much calmer too! She also stays in timeouts much better than she did before we started this. (A few times she had to give me money out of her piggy bank for leaving her room before the timeout was over, and paying fines put a quick stop to some of those negative behaviors....)
