I need help with organizing a childs room...

Ask:
For those of you that have mastered organization and decluttering I need some helpful hints. I have ordered a new bedroom set for my 3 yr old. All that is in her room now is her toys and clothes....piles of toys! I plan on going through it all and getting rid of a lot of things she doesn't need or use anymore since she will be my last child. Anyway...where do I begin? The room is about 16 x 14, woodfloors, big walk-in closet. She has a full size bed, a night stand and a dresser/mirror. I have a ton of space but do not how to make it usefull. Any advice or good websites to look at?
Answer:

We had a family member build shelves in our baby's room. I included both open shelves and closed-we even put a toy box under the windows that doubles as a seat. This obviously could be expensive-the others-I just keep their bedroomtoys to a minimum and keep the rest in the play area.

You have a large walk in closet, that is great! You can add shelves in it if it doesn't have them. We use baskets and those clear storage containers for everything almost and have them stacked in her closet. She doesn't have any toys in her room except for her dollhouse which is on top of her bookshelf. You could check out ikea if you have one near you. They have some cute cheap children's stuff!

I would add some shelves too, you can find all shapes and sizes at many different places. I might also add a desk to hold art/school supplies. An area rug might work too.

The room sounds like it is big enough to have a cozy reading nook - maybe a rug in the corner with a bead bag or big pillows and a small bookcase or crate of books. That is a spot she could use the next several years.

HGTV has some great tips: There are some good ideas for organizing a child's space, and storage solutions, etc. Providing I had the money, I'd invest in furniture pieces (desk, shelving, closet organizer, etc) that would transition well through the years. IE: An antique hope chest topped with a cushion could be used as a toy chest now, but an actual hope chest as she grows older. Or a desk that could be used to store books, put stuffed animals, and art supplies now, but would transition into a full-use desk when she's older. Stuff like that. Underbed storage is great too - rotate toys to keep clutter to a minimum (and it'll make them more fun when they come back out), store away extra blankets, out of season clothing, etc. Good luck - post pictures when you're done.. We'd love to see the end result!

This is a cute idea...I am kinda afraid of bean bags, they are awfully messy when they get ripped!lol I could use a cushy chair. I already have a rug and a little book shelf too.

I likely will do baskets...if I put things in plastic storage container I forget about them...
Thanks for all the great ideas! I do have a little toy chest that sits under the window...doubles as a seat. I like the idea of putting some stuff in bins for under the bed.

Here is a link so you can see the furniture I am putting in her room....she is my last baby so I splurge a little....plus my parents helped with the cost....I just love it though.

How precious! I think for your little reading nook, you should do like a princess canopy in the corner and put her 'throne' underneath for her to sit on. I love it!
