My money saving grocery tip

Ask:
I am always shocked to see how many people buy bags of shredded cheese. It would never occurr to me to buy it already shredded!!! I have always bought big blocks of cheddar and mozerella and shredded what we need. It only takes and extra minute or two and is alot cheaper.
Answer:

I totally agree! I have a friend that only goes to the deli's for her meats, even buys fresh american cheese (ours would get hard by the time it was used up), and pays big bucks at the meat markets to get the best quality. Yet, she'll buy that already shredded cheese - I think it tastes horrible!! They treat it with 'something' to make the cheese not stick together, to me it tastes dry and crumbly. Even if it would really save me time I'd be dubious to try it, I just don't like the taste, but in 2 minutes I can have a 8 oz. block of cheese grated. I mean, how hard Is that?! Good tip!!
Answer:

I agree but at the same time I always remember to 'do the math'. Everything (at least here) has a unit price (how much $ per 100 grams) so it's easy to compare if you look at the tiny print on the price tag. If you don't have that a calculator will work.

Two weeks ago, I was SHOCKED to find out that one brand of shredded cheese was actually less per unit then the block cheese. The prices seem to change every week so I always 'do the math' and sometimes I am surprised at what works out to be cheaper.
Answer:

I only buy shredded cheese when it is on sale. It turns out to be cheaper than the blocked. You might be surprised.

I also buy deli meats at the deli. It may cost more, but the quality is much better. (I don't do cheeses there though.) I have found since joining WW, I may buy more "expensive" food that is lower in fat and calories, but my overall food bill went down as we were eating better - and less of it.

It just depends on the unit price per ounce. You really might be surprised.
Answer:

Blocks are also more versitile. I use the cheddar for sandwiches and such also. I think I get more when I shred it myself also. Also as stormy states, the flavor is better.

I do buy my meat from the deli. The ham is usually cheaper there than pre-packaged.
Answer:

I used to shred all my cheese, then realized it was about the same price to buy it shredded. I buy 5lb bags of shredded cheese and then package it in ziplock quart size bags and freeze them. It is great to pull out to put on a cassarole! I also go to buy meat at the deli. I like it better. AND I do not like WalMart's deli. I go to our local HyVee deli. I like it better.
Answer:

We usually buy cheese in blocks for things like lasagna or tacos and the boys and I don't mind shredding it ourselves. For sandwiches I prefer the deli sliced cheese.

Answer:

I agree with those that said sometimes it is cheaper. I find this a LOT of the times at Kroger...and if it is LESS money, I am certainly not going to argue on it being made easier for me!!!
