Diapers...changing them

Ask:
Alright, so the toddler diaper wiggle has begun. When she makes a diaper, how am I supposed to change her if she doesn't lie down? When it's simply a wet diaper - I can handle running around the house trying to get one on. But...well...I don't want to be cleaning poop out of the carpet for year.

Suggestions to get an 18mo to lie down and get her diaper changed without roping her down? Or making it a wrestling match?
Answer:

Don't chase.... never chase. makes it a game. I lured them with a toy to the same place each time. I kept a special toy just for changin time. While the child is playing with the toy I was taken care of the diaper wrangling. Pretty soon I would take out the toy and the child would go to the changing spot all by herself and wait for me.
Answer:

yep, the toy idea, altho I usually let DS pick what he was gonna take along to play with (as long as I agreed).

No advice from me, but I am looking forward to reading others advice I have a one yr old that won't sit still for a changing either!!
Answer:

Feel blessed that it did not start until 18 months. My 11 month old has been doing it since he could turn over. Literally we have to place a leg over his chest (if we are solo). It acts as the strap on a changing pad, but we are on the floor - it is lightly over him, not overly restrictive, but he knows we mean business. Then I give him an object to distract him and I move FAST. I have the diaper all ready pulled out and tabs released, wipes out of the container, ointment with cap off if needed.

At 18 months they know better so I would not chase for even a wet diaper - they can't distinguish between pee and poop - they just know it is uncomfortable and want it changed.

I'm hoping this will be a sign for easy potty training!

Good Luck.
Answer:

Does she like books? Both my kids loved books and I would give them one of those little board books when I needed them to lay down to change a diaper. It kept them occupied just long enough to get the job done.
Answer:

thanks for the advice everyone. The diaper spot seems to be working BETTER - going to keep trying. Today was a "I'm not putting clothes on, and I'm going to take my diaper off everytime you go into the other room" type of day.

And to think the terrible twos have just begun.
Answer:

I always had to throw one leg over my oldest dd and practically sit on her. Sounds mean and she didn't like it, I told her if she did not want me to do it, than she had to sit still

We have been having those days also lately. Drives me crazy when I hear that velcro ripping off. Yesterday I was feeding the baby and I hear my 2 year old in the dining room ripping off her diaper and she comes to me naked and goes STINKBOMB mommy. so I go look and sure enough there was a stinkbomb ALL OVER my dining room floor!!
Answer:

my ds does fine as long as he has a wipe to swing around while i'm changing him. he has this fascination with swinging wipes and toilet paper around like flags..
