Making bread, question about yeast??

Ask:
Hi, so I'm making my first loaf of bread and I'm hoping for the best Anyway, I'm getting my recipe off of the hillbillyhousewife website and it says that making a loaf of bread should cost around .25 cents? I'm pretty sure my yeast cost 4x that. Where do you buy your yeast and how much should it cost? I bought the packets that come in 3's.
Answer:

Seems to me that buying yeast in the jar is cheaper (2 1/2 tsp= 1 packet, FYI) I think it all depends on how much you pay for your flour and the other ingredients, too....if you are buying in bulk, usually, though not always, is it cheaper. And, where you live also makes a difference....there are things that she says on her website that I cannot find for as cheap as she is getting them. HTH, at least a little.
Answer:

I get mine in the 3 packets for 1.18 or the jar of it is 4.99 Meijer brand.

You can buy a large bag of it at Sam's Club. I can't remember how much it costs, but it's very cheap. I want to say it's less than $6, but I'm not positive. If you buy yeast there or in the jar, store it in the freezer. It will last longer!
Answer:

She's so frugal she may be making her own yeast. I don't know how to do it exactly, seems like you divide the yeast you have, feed it for several days, etc. I bet you could find it on the internet.

I keep mine in the fridge and it keeps a long time, too....I had a jar I used over a year past the expiration by keeping it in the fridge.

Just an update...my first bread attempt turned out wonderful! DH and FIL raved about it! Yea!

So, I looked around online and found that Walton Feed has a big bag of yeast and they said that, even if the expiration date has come and gone, if it's kept in the freezer, they've had people use it for up to 15 years. I'm thinking I might just get one of those big bags and save money. $6 for a bag is cheap compared to $1/packet!!

So glad your bread turned out well. My dh loves homemade bread too.

Great job on finding cheaper yeast, because once you do that it really is a big savings AND it tastes way better then store bought.

Isn't there a trick where you mix the yeast in warm water and if it doesn't bubble then it's old or won't work?
