Ask:
I received Carson's report card and he is doing great, but I don't know much about kindergarten expectations with reading. I've been teaching secondary school since 1989, but I have little knowledge about early ed.
I decided to grab his teacher for a moment when I picked him up, if other parents weren't talking to her, to ask about his reading. He tries to read all the time at home, and I think he does a pretty good job, but I'm mom.....
Anywho, I asked her if they have leveled reading groups. They do. So I asked what group Carson was in...is he struggling or is he doing okay? He is in the highest reading group and he is the best reader in the class. Apparently, by the end of kindergarten they need to be reading at a level 3. He is already on level 5 and she projects that he will be reading at level 9 by the end of the year. :rah rah: I'm so proud of him!!!
Just had to share.

WOW! I don't know if we have reading based on levels here. I'll have to ask. I also have a kindergartener, and it is SO much fun right now to see him reading things. He tries to everywhere we go...and he does a really good job at it. Sometimes, I even get a little sad thinking that someone besides MOMMY is teaching him these important things!! LOL Until now, he was ALL MINE!!!!!
Answer:
I know just what you mean....I took my daughter to preschool on day 1 and sat in my car and bawled my eyes out....there she was...5 years old and out in the world "without me".
letting go is hard.

Reading just finally clicked with Karenna too. I was concerned with how she was doing, up until now it's just been her phonics readers they bring home, but something clicked in the last couple weeks and now she is reading EVERYTHING!!
It is so fun to see them enjoy something new to them, and how proud they are they can do it on their own.
Answer:
Wow my daughter was not really introduced to reading real good til she got in 1st grade she is reading level 2 books .She also likes Junie B.books don't know the level for those but she loves them. She just bought her 2nd one yesterday.
Answer:
Yeah for Carson!!!!! It is so much fun when they read!! I didn't realize he was the same age as my Matt. Matt is now doing real well also, but it took him a while to catch on to sounding out those letters. Brittany caught on very quickly and I was somewhat worried about Matt, but he is now in the top of his class.

Way to go Carson.
Okay now I am scared, Evan is also in Kindergarten, and will read words but not entire pages. I also didn't realize they are have levels. I think tonight the two of us will go in his room alone (brother will interrupt and maybe that's why I didn't seem to notice) and see how he does.
Could you give me some titles of the books he reads?
Now he does read his weekly take home boo (Xerox copy), but sometimes I think he has more memorized it than anything.
