Need Dental Care Advice~~!!!!

Ask:
My four year old let them do x-rays yesterday, but FREAKED out and wouldn't let them clean her teeth. The 'great' part of this is she has FOUR cavities and has to go back for THOSE!! *skeeeeeeeeeeeeered*

I asked at the desk if they give lil' kids nitrous oxide or whatever and was told, they give the kids a 'little drink' that makes them dozy, but she won't be 'put to sleep'. I'm VERRRRRRRRRY stressed thinking about this visit already and would REALLY like to hear from folks with some first hand experience. My other kids never had to have fillings when they were so little!! *in fact, my 14 year old hasn't ever had one at all!* but my BABY has to now .
Answer:

Is this a pediatric dentist office or your dentist office? I have had wonderful experience at our pediatric dentist office (not that we have had cavities filled). But I would want to know if the cavities have to be filled? since they are in the baby teeth?
Answer:

It's the pediatric dentist that comes to the regular office, on Saturdays only. I am 'guessing' that since she's only 4 and has a WHILE left yet before they fall out, is why they'd fill them, that's what I 'assumed' anyway I've taught 3 year olds that had the silver caps and such,, so I just thought it was cause she was young.. eeeeeek, now I dunno

Going to post this under chit chat, so more folks will see it, I keep googling info and getting more and more freakedout/confused and don't know what to make of it all
Answer:

Yes, she needs her cavities filled.

She doesn't NEED to drink the medicine IF she will co-operate. However, if she won't they have to do something.

My DD is awesome when it comes to the dentist. She even begs me to make an appointment so she can go get her teeth cleaned. However, her best friend didn't go to the dentist until she was 5 yrs old and sure enough she had multiple cavities. She co-operated with the dentist and got them all filled with just numbing the teeth. However, we have a terrific dentist who specializes in children, and she's a pretty obedient little girl, so I can't guarantee every case would be resolved so well.

Anyway, I'm glad you're getting your DD's teeth taken care of. It is so important.

I don't have any advice...

I have a freakable child as well. He likes going to the dentist now, but it took many times of practicing going before he would even let them look into his mouth. I fear the day they tell me he has to have anything done.

Big hugs sorry I wasn't much help. I'm watching this one for good advice too.
Answer:

My six year old just had to have some teeth removed because his adult teeth were coming in behind them. They gave him some funny gas as they called it. Ask if she could have some laughing gas....it might take the edge off her nervousness.

Thanks for the replies ya'll. I just HATE when I don't know what's best for my kiddos. I'm troubled enough by that simple fact that she HAS cavities... NOT good! She's never let them manage to do anything before yesterday's visit. She was SOOO cute takin' x'rays, sitting all big, wouldn't sit in my lap,,, putting on her 'game face' to bite the ones that are 'odd' and such,, I had GRAND hopes..... yeah well, that changed!

She was screaming at the thought of them COUNTING her teeth even. There will be NO 'cooperating' nicely, of that I'm certain. I just 'figured' they surely use something, so asked about the nitrous and was told , they'll give her a 'little drink',,, thinkin' mama's gonna need a BIG drink! :P
Answer:

My #3 son used to always freak out at the dentist. He had a cavity when he was about 5. We go to a pediatric dentist and he had a little straight jacket type thing that he put my son in. I was also there holding him down and so was a hyginist. Of course this sounds mean, but it was either that or they would have to fill it at the hospital as out patient, so they could knock him out. The dentist just worked on my son when his mouth was open screaming!!!
Answer:

*shudders* eeeeeeeeeek happymom!! i KNOW i'd need a 'big drink' for that! I'm ALLLLL for the 'drugs' to avoid the trauma! I want her safe, don't get me wrong, but OHNO, not the 'torture'. My oldest daughter had to be papoosed 2 times within just a couple months at the age of 3, and it's just more than I can bear. Now, that I'm OLD, I realllllllllly can't begin to imagine putting either my chick or myself thru it.
