My Jenna who is 3 just had 3 filled on Wed. At okur dentist they gave her some red juice -which is liquid versed - a " I don't care" medicine takes effect quickly within 5 -10 minutes she was giggling and you could not understand her words they act just like a drunk person - then they give her Mr. Nose(laughing gas) Jennna was so still and behaved so well they did not even have to numb her with the injections Yeah! after they are done we had to wait out in the waiting area for awhile because they got done so fast she was still loopy and then I had the pleasure of her throwing up all over me! The dentist said sometimes that can happen - and of course if it can happen it will happen to my Jenna anyway they felt sorry for me and gave me a free t shirt so I would not have to drive home with yuck all over! She was a little drunk for about a total of 2 hours but after that she was the same sweet "innocent" Jenna as always - Hope that helps Robin

When my ds was 4, he had to have the medicine to get some cavities filled. He really did okay with it. I was very nervous too, and it wasn't as bad as I had expected. HTH Good luck!

My 4yr dd is going next Thursday to have "marshmallow pillows" put in her teeth aka fillings. They give them some sort of medicine to help sedate them?! What exactly is it? I assume it's safe. I was so horrified and in shock when the dentist told me she needed some fillings I didn't think to ask how they go about doing it. One of the mom's mentioned her child getting ill afterwards. Is it better that the child has some sort of food in their stomach for this stuff they drink or not? Think I'm going to make a phone call to my dentist and ask some questions that I should of asked when we were there........

Thanks for the posts and info ya'll. I actually really feel better just hearing from folks that have actually experienced it. Guess it also means my baby isn't the ONLY one to ever get cavities so early,, that part has me all unhappy to begin with! *understands the 'horrified about cavities' thing very well*
Thanks for taking the time to respond to me.
Answer:
nm mom - The policy is nothing to eat or drink after midnight if they are getting the sedation -Versed the liquid stuff that they drink tis is a very common short acting sedation used quite often in short procedures. He said that although it was not a common reaction it does happen ( as far as getting sick after) Versed can affect people different - I used to work in surgery and for most people it was just a feel good relax medicine with an amnesia type effect every so often sometimes some people would cry and be upset but not often. Most kids do very well like I said earlier if it can happen it will happen to my Jenna thanks Robin

Hmmmm..... now I'm really wondering what our pediatric dentist uses for fillings. I would assume that if they use this Versed stuff they would have already told me that my dd couldn't eat anything after midnight before her appt. If they do use it that's not going to work anyway because her appointment isn't until 11am! Dd can't go that long without eating something. Anyway going to call first thing Monday morning and find out the scoop.
Thanks for the info!
Answer:
Hmmmm, they didn't mention the not eating or drinking to me either. We will DEFINITELY have to reschedule and spend the night somewhere if that's the case. Our appointment isn't until 2 pm ,, AND it's over an hour drive away! I'll be calling on Monday morning as well apparently myself. Thanks so much for the info, this is a VERY helpful place to come to

My DGD just went for her first dental appointment on Monday. She will be 7 in May. She would not let them x-ray. They did do a cleaning. She has one cavity. This visit was at a regular dentist. They have her an appointment with a Pediatic Dentist on March 20th at 3 PM. The regular dentist just said she would need to be sedated. I didn't know there were different kinds of sedation. I am so glad I read this post. Now I feel like we need to check out what they will do to her that day. Thanks ladies.
Answer:
So I called my pediatric dentist and the gal at the front desk told me that our doctor doesn't do any kind of sedation like the "Versed" mentioned earlier. She said because my daughter's cavity is in a baby tooth they do not have much feeling in them because they don't have roots like the adult teeth. Our dentist also uses some sort of high power water drill that isn't as traumatizing. We'll see how it goes on Thursday................
