Ask:
My daughter who will be 6 months on March 10th still struggles to hold her head up. SHe can for a short time and than it flops down or tpo the side and she has to rest it on my shoulder if I am holding her. She is sitting in her exersaucer now and an she holds it up for 30 seconds if that and then it flops to the side and she rests it on the padded chair part. I have 3 other kids but I alwasy remember their necks being much stronger much earlier. Do you think I should be concerned?
She has had a lot of medical issues but I dont think that those would effect her strength in her neck to balance and hold her head up.
Answer:
It sounds like you might want to call the ped about this. Six months does seem pretty late for this to be happening. Not to alarm you, but I think that you should follow up on it just to be sure.

She has an appointment with her ped. on Monday, obviously for other issues but I am planning on bringing it up!
Answer:
Let us know how the Dr, appt. goes. If I remember correctly both my babies were holding there heads up by then.

I would also think she should be able to hold it up better. But it really could have something to do with her being so sick. Just her general strength could be down. Glad you are going to talk to the pediatrician
Answer:
I agree. Even with the issues, she should be holding her little head up. I am so surprised that no one has caught this. There may indeed be muscle tone issues that PT can help. I hope you get some answers. I do understand some delays, with all that little angel has been through, but this is an important thing. Please let us know what happens.
Answer:
Yeah I agree see the MD and see if PT is a option.. I worked at a PT office before I became a SAHM and am a Massage Therapist. We had to at times do PT for babies with neck issues... Could be her being sick, or can be something from when she was born??? Just check, and let us know what the MD says. I hope the best for you.

I agree with the other ladies as far as bringing it up to her pediatrician. I'm sure this is probably getting lost in the shuffle due to all of Lily's other issues right now. To help increase her neck strength, however, you can do more tummy time with her. There are also other exercises you can do, such as holding her facing outward, and slightly tipping her to one side or the other (it increases the muscle strength on the sides of the neck).
We had to take Leah to PT because they were concerned she might develop torticollis (stiffness in the neck muscles). She had a strawberry birthmark on the side of her head that was very painful, and she always kept her head turned to one side (guarding that birthmark). It resulted in weakened muscles on the other side of her neck. You'd never know it now though! She's a perfectly healthy 3 year old!

I talked to her pediatrician this morning about it and she had already set up PT for torticollis and now she said they can also work on her neck strength..which is good!

My oldest child had several medical issues and this was also a problem for her. She did not even really start tryinig to do any of these things until she was about 8 months old. In my daughters case she was just to sick and tired to concentrate on this milestone. I did also get her physical training for her and I did a lot of things at home for her. I would mention it to your doc but try not to worry to much, when Sam started feeling better she amazed me with how quick she started picking these things up.
