Ask:
My dd just turned 2 in January. I am starting to work on numbers and letters more aggressively. She really isn't interested. She can write a B and count to 2 (with help from me). But when I get out the number magnents or alphabet puzzles, she glazes over. SHe is a very hands-on kid. I have already gotten out the big paper and drawn them with her. We have number books, and i read ALL THE TIME with her. But I am unsure what else to try...
Does anyone have any ideas.
Answer:
Wow. I think that is really good for 2 to be able to draw a B. My dd turned 2 in January also and she can say the ABC's and count to 5 but I know that she is no where near trying to write a letter. In fact my 3 year does not write letters yet. I think that the best thing to do would be to just keep practicing and trying different activities with her. We have the Leap Frog Fridge Alphabets and my dd's love it! It even helps my 6 year old with the phonics sounds. It sounds like you are doing everything just fine you just need to be patient and give it some time.
Answer:
I would just back off for now and let her enjoy toddlerhood. Keep just doing the videos (Dora, Blues Clues, etc.) that are good for her. Leapfrogs refrigerator magnet set is great, too! She has plenty of time.
Answer:
Children will learn these when they are ready and interested Why rush childhood. You could get a fun Sesame Street Video that introduces these concepts.
Start simple with little one.
- Counting 1-5
- Introducing letters like the first letter of their name, m for mom, d for dad.
Kids will learn when they are ready...oh and don't mistake the singing of the alphabet song as being ready to learn the letters. Many little ones just know it as a song and learn the letters later. Make sure when you do sing the song with you child that you pause between the letters L M N O P because they tend to blend them into one group.

Answer:
I try not to push the ABC's and 1-2-3's with my older dd (3) much. She knows her abc's and how to count but I have heard that teaching kids things before they are interested and ready isn't a great idea. I'd keep trying occasionally without pushing, or maybe even not try just for a bit. She'll show you when she's more receptive to learning these things. Sounds like you have a smart cookie on your hands if she can already draw the letter B. You're doing awesome mama, don't put too much pressure on yourself (and her ).
Answer:
My almost 4 yr old isn't interested either!!! I figure he still has a year to figure it all out!
Answer:
just read (like you are doing)! She'll learn when ready. Puzzles, books, magnets, Leap Frog items are great. Chicka Chicka series is great and my son's fav. I think you are being too hard on yourself, let yourself relax and have fun! Playdoh is great for making letters and numbers in a hand's on way! Posters and pics put up in your playroom, bedroom, whatever are good for visual. You can try for some fun free activities.
Answer:
just keep reading and singing and playing music!! (like abc songs and such )dance around and just count things along the way make everything you do daily into counting and playing!!
That was the best thing a teacher told me with my dd!! she was writing her name and counting to 10 before she was 3 (mind you she has an older sister who she likes to keep up with! )
just have fun!!!!! it will come in time!! the more fun we had and less I pushed the quicker she got things!!
Answer:
My son is 20 months and he enjoys the ABC's song. He also likes the Leap Frog Letter Magnets. They play a song for each letter...it is cute!
Do you have the spongy letters for the bath tub. My son has fun sticking them on the side of the tub.
I don't push the letters and numbers, but I just go over them in a playful manner.
Answer:
Yes, I hope I didn't sound like I was being a Sergent! I should have said, that I'm working on them enthusiastically. But I think you are all right, it is a little early to be concerned about her abilities. Thinking back, she is more receptive when we are singing Songs, today I got her up to "C" with the ABC song! :yay!: I was so excited.
I didn't think of playdoh... I'm going to try and get a few posters for her room. I haven't heard of the leap frog magnets! Can you get them at Target, or maybe toys r us??
Thank you for the advice! I'm going to use all of it!
