I am at an impass...

Ask:
I really want to declutter and live simply. I am having a huge garage sale the first weekend in April (an annual thing) and am really getting serious. BUT then my DH says "can you really have too many pillow cases?" *GASP*....I think he thinks as long as things fit in drawers, closets, and basements ther is no problem having as much as you can cram in a space.

Anyway...I digress...
I am very much regretting purchases I made with good intensions as gifts to give throughout the next few years...YES, I said next FEW years! Many of the items are things I had plan to make. I don't want to do it anymore. Should I suck it up, keep the items, force myself to make them and give them as gifts since they are already paid for....OR...get rid of them at the garage sale, let someone else enjoy making the items, and chalk the $ up to lessons learned? We are talking MAYBE $50 total. I just don't know that it is worth saving $50 to stunt my simple living growth.
What do you think?

One thing I DID do...after having a really death soul search...I threw away old cleaning products that I had kept for years just because "they were paid for" and I thought I would evenutally use them. Bye Bye junk!
Answer:

I'd say get rid of it! You will feel better!
Answer:

I agree, get rid of it. Then you don't have those projects looming over you. It will be a relief.
Answer:

I always think if I haven't finished one project and have already moved on to another, I'm never going to go back...

I say call it a loss and get on with your simpler life!
Answer:

Get rid of them. You will feel so much better. I used to think like that and every now and then I will slip, but it really does feel better when the clutter is gone.
Answer:

Why not put them on the barter board until the garage sale. that way u can possible recoup the cost in a different way. then come garage sale time if they are still available just get rid of them.

Answer:

I hadn't even thought about the barter board! Thanks!
Answer:

I say definitely barter or garage sale the items. You won't enjoy making them so what is the point. Count this as a lesson learned.

My only comment is that Easter is April 8th this year. School break, in my area, is the last week of March. It is possible that many families may be away - and not garage saling - the first weekend of April.

That said, when in doubt, get rid of it. Live life with an attitude of abundance. IF you decide to purchase the item again, you can and will. If you're still unsure, close your eyes and imagine both scenerios - keeping the item and getting rid of it. If keeping the item, the craft projects for instance, fills you with dread, then get rid of it. If you really would have to FORCE yourself to finish the projects, then they aren't worth keeping. Now imagine getting rid of the item then finding you needed it or could have used it, how do you feel? If your reaction is a mild, "Oh well, what is done is done." Then get rid of the item. If the feeling is a strong sinking in the pit of your stomach, you might want to hang onto it - for now. You can always get rid of it later.

Can you have too many pillowcases? Yes! I made a few that I inherited from my parents into: a rag bag, a ball storage bag, a hanging storage bag for my wrapping paper rolls - and got rid of the rest. If you really MUST keep them, make the ones with nicer fabric into sewing projects like gift bags and little girl dresses. You could even cut them up into cloth napkinds or even cleaning rags. Otherwise, they are gone!
