Scary high fever in 5-yr old

Ask:
There is something going around the kindergarten class. I thought DD already had it. Boy was I wrong!!!

She woke up last night at 1:30am with a scary, high fever. She was thrashing around with a bad dream. Later her fever got so high she started to hear buzzing in her ears. We've had this before, it isn't an earache. I think her blood pressure gets so high with the fever that it causes her ears to ring. Her heart was racing.

I gave her tylenol and it didn't touch it! I finally put her in the bathtub in hopes that would cool her off. She then fell asleep to the rock music station on the radio because it drowned out the ringing in her ears.

I hate when DD is sick. For the life of me, I've never had a kid who gets fevers like this. It is scary. The worse part is she is just sick enough to feel cruddy, but she still has energy and wants to do something. She's in the fustrating netherworld of being sort-of sick.

This virus brings with it a gooey, nagging cough, too. She's getting guifensen in hopes she doesn't develop a bacterial infection, too.

Why am I posting? I guess I just need moral support. I feel so badly for the little one. She just wants me to hold her all day.
Answer:

Big hugs and prayers on the way. It's so scary when kids get sick.....
Answer:

Poor thing!! Don't you wish you could just hold her all day!!!
Answer:

How high was the fever? DS had a fever of 104.7. The Dr.'s website said to call if it's over 105, or if it wasn't deemed urgent, we'd be charged $20. I held off. When I mentioned it to the Dr., she said 104.7 was close enough to urgent. (Then change it to 104!!!) Anyway, Tylenol did help him. I just didn't want to sit in an ER for 4 hrs w/ 104 on my son, which I've seen happen. Is she doing better?
Answer:

my oldest dd gets really high fevers...she has a lower body temp so when it is 103 it is like 105 on her....I take a cold wash cloth and keep wiping her hands with it...and it seems to help lower it faster...and I put cool wash cloth on her for head....along with Motrin....around her the alternate Tylenol then 2 hrs later they will give Motrin...hope she starts feeling better fast.
Answer:

Hope she starts feeling better soon...I hate it when kids are sick, you just wish you could take it from them...but...I overheard the pharmasist the other day tell someone that they could give their child a full dose of Motrin and then 4 hours later give a full dose of Tylenol and keep repeating until the fever breaks...HTH
Answer:

How scary for you - and your dd!! Prayers are lifted that she feels much better soon - and stays healthy. I pray that you are able to rest, too, as I'm sure you've lost sleep due to worry.
Answer:

You can actually give the tylenol and motrin at the same time then do the 4 hr mark and six hour mark so that way none of it wares off. If you are going to do cool rags its best to put them under your arms on your neck and behind your knees those are the areas that have the thinest amount of skin and the coolness can get in. My daughter never ran a normal temp of 101 or 102 hers started off at 104 and would go from 104-105 all the time so I became a pro at midnight baths and sleepless nights for fear of it getting too high but the one good thing behind it is that you know her body is killing the germs that are in there. just remember to not bundle her up preferably very little clothes on or just under clothes. So the heat can escape. Good luck keep us posted
