Swimming Lessons

Ask:
Have you ever taken your child to a paid swimming lesson at the Y? At what age and did your child like it?

My sons LOVE the water. Thankfully....as we are a navy family afterall! They loved the beach at Florida and loved being in the water all the time. I'm thinking this late summer/early fall of putting them in swimming lessons: Zach will be four and Ty will be two.
Answer:

We have never done them at the Y specifically - but through the Com. Ed. program. Aurora started when she was 4 and continued on until 6 (then we just go too busy). I think that your boys will do fine, especially with the background they have in the water already.

I want to get the younger kids started this year here somewhere. Karenna is 6 and NEEDS them, as does Lorelei (4). The only thing is here the "pool" is this little pond formed off the lake near us with mud and fish and stuff. They do offer Red Cross swim lessons though...if my kids will go in
Answer:

I did it at the Y with my oldest from age 4 1/2 to 5 1/2. He was very cautious with the water (always loved the pool and the beach but when it came time to swim in the deep end he was scared). The first teacher we had was awful and we ended up not even going to all of the lessons we had paid for because I felt like she was hurting our cause instead of helping it. Then we found a friend that wanted to take lessons too and we did semi-private lessons with a different teacher. These went much better. He liked competing with his friend! Then that child stopped doing the lessons and we continued on with private lessons for a few months until my ds got tired of it. I think the prices are great at the Y and if you find a good teacher, it is a really good thing to do.
Answer:

We did the Y when he was 4. A lot of people here liked it, but he didn't really like it. Now he's readier so we'll try again.
Answer:

We took them at the Y when my oldest was about 4 years old, I think. He liked it ok, but has since become scared of the water. It is KILLING me as I grew up in a water family. He loves the beach, but does not want to learn to swim. I think we may have to do one on one lessons this year. He is now 7.
Answer:

We did 'Mommy & Me' type classes at the Y and then also at our own pool with both of our kids. We started at around age 3 or 4 I think, I don't remember exactly. They both liked the classes well enough. It just depends on the child obviously.
Answer:

Lexi and I are in a Mommy and me course right now at our public pool! She loves it.
Answer:

Last year I took both the boys for the first time. They had to be old enough to touch in the shallow end, so Wyndser won't be able to go this year either. It's not the Y, but our local pool....Anyway, they were 4 and 5 last year. I could pay 3x's as much and take Wyndser to the health club this year, but I don't think it is worth it when I can take her next year for waaaaaaay cheaper.
Answer:

We started mommy & me classes when my daughter was about 12 months old. My daughter has always loved the water. Last summer, she started lessons by herself (3 1/2) and she did great. We took lessons through the parks & rec dept. Her teachers said they could tell she'd spent lots of time in the water because she had no fear of the water. She was jumping off the diving board to her teacher by the end of the 8 weeks. I can't wait for her to start again this summer.
Answer:

Not at the Y (never lived anywhere with one) but at the community pool. I started 2 of them at 4, but none of the boys did very well until after kindergarten. Of course, I am definitely not a swimmer. I hate the water!
