Ask:
My ds just brought home a revised calendar for the remainder of the school year. Apparently they have to make up 6 snow days. I can only think of 4 that we had. Well anyway, one of the days they have to go to school is Memorial Day. WTH!?!?!?!?! CAn the school administration really do this? My dh said they can't make you go on a federal holiday. Needless to say OUR kids will not be in school that day
Do any of your kids have to make up snow days?
Answer:
I think we usually have about 4 snow days built into our schedule (at least that is how it was at our old school) We have only used 2 so far, so no make up days.
Answer:
We've used 2 & have to make them both up. They don't build any calamity days into our school calendar. What I want to know is, who in NW Chicago thought that was a good idea?
Answer:
I live in Indiana and our school system schedules 182 days (above the required 180) and ALSO build in 2 flex days. That way our kids can miss 4 days before they have to start making them up, so we haven't had a change in our schedule.
Answer:
We live in Indiana also, and our snow makeup days were over Feb. (1 day) and May(1 day) and June 8. Hopefully we won't have any more. I was surprised that they didn't have any built in to the school year!!
Answer:
We have to make up 4 days. Ours have been scheduled during the year though so we don't have to do any extras at the end of the year. I've never heard of having to go on Mem. Day. I would think it would not be mandatory.
Answer:
Here they just shorten your spring break or Easter Vacation. Since they only have 2 days off this year for Easter, they allowed us 3 snow days, which we used up last Friday. Hopefully all the heavy snow is over with now!
Answer:
How very interesting that they would schedule one of the snow days to be on Memorial Day. If you think you are irrate about it, think about the teachers who probably had plans and are now forced to cancel so they can be at work. I also wonder how to capacity the schools will be running that day as I would be one of the first, plans or not, to call the school and say that my kids won't be there. And I wouldn't lie to the school about the reason either. When I call my kids out, I'm always asked if they are sick or if it is a parental request. If the kids aren't sick then I over ride their 2 reasons with it is a parental right.
Our district always put in an extra day or 2 for snow days, but seldom do we use them. Our school district thinks it is more important that these kids get killed on slippery or unplowed streets, than leave a child home alone because the parents have to work. Our district is the city babysitters. Prime example is the snow storm/blizzard that hit earlier this month. Every road coming into the city had been shut down and most roads in the city were also closed. Law enforcement told people to stay home, but how? Schools here didn't close. They didn't want to inconvenience the parents who had to be to work. And our district isn't afraid to tell the people this, of course they always add that if you do not feel it safe for your child to attend then by all means call them out.
In the past to make up for a snow day that went over the schedule, they have always just subtracted a day or so from any upcoming breaks, or back in 1997 when our city totally shut down for a week from a major early snow that left most of the city without power, they put the kids on a 15 minute longer day for the rest of the year.
