Ask:
I am asking for five because I know that most responses to the first word would probably be "mama" or "dada". The 14 month old I keep isn't talking as much as any of my children were at this age. I am working on changing that! He cries a lot to get his point across, and it is driving me nuts!!! He CAN say mama, dada, "side" (for outside), and Abby!!! That is about it. Oh, and he just started trying to say, "Stop". It is hilarious! He puts his top half of body forward, like he is putting his face in yours and says, "TTTTHHHHHOT"! We all crack up!!
Answer:
Daddy (mommy came MUCH later - she never had to ask for my attention, I guess), bunny rabbit (plain as day, then not again until later), heart. Very first word: Star. Hot Doggy, kitty cat.
Just as an aside, we always teach them scorpion, so we teach them don't touch. I've shown her where there are (yuck!) dead scorpions you can see thru the garage light and one of the water closet lights (yep, dh needs to get the ladder). She calls them "circle button" and points them out each time.
Answer:
My 5yr olds first words beside mama and dada were: cheese, shoes, horse (shoeshe), balloon (oon), cup (pupsees). He started talking around his 1st b-day if not before.
My 21mo old only says a few things: mama, dada, ball, apple, juice, berry (for blueberries which he loves and it's our cat's nickname), bobo (for our dog Zoe), cup (which sounds more like wup), Pooh. He knows so much more than he can or is willing to say right now. I can ask him to point to different things in a book and he is right every time, he can make some of the animal sounds, you can ask him to give so and so a hug and a kiss or tell him to get this or that and he comes right back with whatever it is I told him to get. He will point to all his body parts (and ours!) when asked. He just points to most things and cries/whines. I know a lot of it is my fault, since I stay home with him and know what he needs and basically have always gotten it for him before he has needed to say it. He doesn't call his brother anything though, which is concerning me. His Ped at his 18mo appt said we'd wait until his 2yr check up to see how his speech is coming along. Part of me thinks he will catch up just fine. He seems content to just sit back and take it all in, watch and follow his brother's direction for things. I read to him during the day and the same 3 books every night. He doesn't try to sound out any of the words though (of the books I've been reading nightly for months now). I don't know. I don't want to worry yet in case it's nothing, but I just want to also be prepared if he'll need extra help. And I"m sorry for taking over this thread with my post!!
Answer:

As long as the 14-month old is uttering sounds, he will be fine.
Answer:
Boo, milk, wow, ma, and eat. But Josie didn't even start saying those until she around 19-20 mths old.
Answer:
DD didn't REALLY start putting effort into talking until she was past 18 mo. By then she had about 20 words that she used on a regular basis. between 20-25 months (current) her language has REALLY developed. I've worked with her a lot and sit on the couch in the mornings and talk with her - point things out, etc.
Her first 5 words occured Before 18 months but she got ALL of her teeth at once, there were several months where she was getting 4-5 teeth at a time. That really slowed down her language. Her words were: "mama" - "dada" - "doggy" - "cup" - "Hi".
Answer:
I dont remember all five of my first childs words although I know it is written somewhere. She was talking A LOT by the time she was 13 months. She still doesnt shut up
My 18 month old is quieter, however she has just began putting 2 and 3 words together and it is the cutest thing ever. Her first five words were... Mama, Dada, Kitty, Cookie, and Baba. I thinlk my first daughters were pretty much the same now that I think of it.
Answer:
mama...dada....apple...bubble...me(caue I use to aske her "who's it all about?" and she would say "...me!!me!!me!!")
