Ask:
or even backpack if I could get really serious!
OK...maybe that is a bit extreme...but I think I am to the point of wanting just what I need. It is a strangly freeing thought.
Things I've done that I never drempt I woul do....
#1This morning I made arrangements to give all my Christmas studio 56 village ( a large collection) and all my exterior decorations and lights away with the exception of a wooden nativity that comes apart and stores completely flat (actually we hang it on our garage wall. I will deliver them this Friday.
#2 Decided to part with my Fiestaware collection. In the process of working on that. the decission was the hardest part!
#3 Came to realization that I would rather DO something with my time and money rather than buy things and clean them. I want to vacation...do things with my children...stuff like that.
#4 Realized that I can get rid of things without feeling guilt from the reaction of others. My Mom is ALWAYS trying to get me to hang on to things because the are sentimental.
#5 I am going to stop holding on to things for other people. My niece could use this later...my Mom would be md if I got rid of it....so and so paid a lot of money for this...I paid a lot of money for this.
Hmmmm...
Anyone else got any good ideas for mentally decluttering your life?
Answer:
number 5 is my thing. I am no longer doing that either. I have given friends up to one week to come and get items I think they would want to then it's gone. I usually declutter on thurs so u have until sunday or I will give them to church. I do alot of volunteer work that I ended up holding onto donations, but I am setting a time limit now. I used to wait to donate clothes so I could give them for church garage sale in fall, no more holding onto it.

Wow! I finally found someone who feels like I do! I'm tired of all the stuff! If I had it my way I would get rid of everything!
I'm getting rid of my curio cabinet. It has stuff in there that I don't even like or want. It sits in front of a window and somewhat blocks the view (it's angled).
Also my wedding china. I picked out a pattern I don't even like now, we've never used it and it takes up space in my cabinet. It's been there for almost 15 years. Also my crystal wine glasses............we don't drink!
This stuff doesn't make me happy. All I'm thinking is "I really should clean this". It's a bit dusty.

I also have this issue. My husband makes fun of me for constantly getting rid of stuff. I don't have a lot of stuff but if I'm not using it, it has to go.
I go through my girls clothing and toys monthly. I rotate toys, give some away and get rid of clothing we won't use or outgrew.

I have come to the same feelings! I got rid of a lot lately and it feels so good. But I do want to keep my dept.56 it brings me joy to decorate it and I love to look at it. I would have bought yours from you!!!!!!!!

I've felt like this too. My sister is an inactive Marine (once a Marine, always a Marine...lol) and she lived out of her duffel bag for so long. My sister is the world's biggest packrat. If she can do it, and be happy, then it's possible for me too! Not that I want to shove all my belongings into a duffel bag, but it's the idea. I, too, am tired of cleaning junk. Material goods are temporal - they're not going with you when you die. I think that when you decide you want a lasting change from your decluttering, it becomes a new lifestyle. Things will change in the way you look at purchases and the necessity or desire for them. This is a huge thing for me right now. We are purchasing a vacuum cleaner with part of our tax refund, and I really wanted a Dyson Animal vacuum. I was even prepared to spend $500 on one. And I even got a little mad when DH said he didn't want to spend that much. But your post here, it got me thinking. I realize now that I'd rather spend $200 on a vacuum and use the other $300 on doing things as a family -- going to the zoo, the amusement park, going swimming, etc. If I'm going to spend the money, I want to spend it on making memories with my family, and not on some machine that's going to sit in a closet 99% of it's life. Kathy, thanks for snapping me out of it and back to the reality I've wanted so badly for so long! Oh, and sorry about hijacking the thread with my personal epiphany!

Great thread!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!
#4 and #5 consume me and I am working hard on getting over them and I have finally realized how stressed they make me and how much useless time I spend thinking about hurting someone for getting rid of something or how my Mom is going to tell me I will regret it later.

I did something similar with a large doll collection last year. I not only got rid of the dolls, but I sold the cabinet so I wouldn't be tempted to refill it with other junk.
To this day, I don't know how I got so many dolls...I don't even like dolls...

I JUST got off the phone with my MIL! Sh actually said "you guys are starting to outgrow your house...you should look for a bigger one!" I said "actually, I am thinking about a smaller one!"
SO...I shared my new thinking and she was SILENT!!! First time for everything!
She then started asking me about certain things and if I were planning to get rid of them. She also stated that some ideas are OK in moderation.
I LOVE doing what I WANT with MY Stuff!
Free at last!
