Ask:
I am in the middle of organizing and decluttering my garage. Yesterday DH took EVERYTHING out to our driveway and took all nails, hooks, hangers off the walls so we could start fresh.
Has anyone done this to their garage and found they did some things that have really work out great...or some things that didn't work so well when it was all said and done? I am really wanting to find a way to store sports equiptment without having a big black hole box to dig through. Any other tipes would be great!
Answer:
Yes...we typically take everything out every spring and power wash the garage etc It's so great to start off fresh in the spring each year.
My DH has his workbench and all of his tools and stuff in the basement, so we don't have that to tackle in the garage. Dh has it well organized down there with bins and shelving with everything labeled.
One thing that we really like are hooks for things like bikes and scooters...getting them off the floor and onto the wall. We also have open shelving with some bins for things like balls, chalk, outside toys etc It really helps keep it organized but stuff isn't rolling all over the place either.
I keep things like rakes, hoes and other long handled gardening/yard tools in old fashioned metal trash cans. Everything is upright, in one place and it doesn't look bad (at least to me).
My inlaws have a 'fancy' garage where everything is hidden in cabinets. I teased them about it but now I want some cabinets! L.OL! I would love to 'hide' away a lot of garden stuff on shelves in a cabinet and be able to just shut the door and have it be all neat and tidy. Also keep my recycling bin and trashcan in the cabinet so it's not out in the open in the garage...just to tidy things up. I could go crazy hiding things away!
I really try to get rid of empty paint cans, dry out cans with sm amts of paint in them all year round...otherwise it seems like they multiply on their own! You can call your city or county for places to drop off pesticides, full paint cans etc
Answer:
Mesh laundry bags - the big ones - at the dollar stores are great for storing balls and most other sports equipment. Just stuff the sports item in the appropriate bag then hang them on a hook.
