Ask:
Do any of you suffer from buyer's remorse? (That horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach that asks 'what have I done?' when you make a purchase and you second guess yourself, which is often made worse when the item can not be easily returned)
How do you handle buyer's remorse?
Do you get it more with big ticket items (a home, a car, a cottage, a motorcycle) then with smaller items (clothes, perfume, a new pair of black leather boots that were way more than you meant to spend)?
Or do you feel more comfortable with the larger purchases but second guess yourself with the smaller items?
Answer:
I posted something about this awhile back, I get it ALL the time. At least once a month. Mine is normally with small items like clothing and even the extra groceries. How I handle it is complain to my DH about how bad I feel and unless it is something horrible, he normally tells me that it is fine and that we can make the money up somewhere else. I HATE buyers remorse... urgh
Answer:
I usually get it on the "big" ticket items. At Christmastime my husband got a much larger then usual Christmas bonus so we splurged and bought a new livingroom set (the one we had we bought at a yardsale probably 12 years ago) because we have never had a brand new one. Anyway, I felt incredibly guilty thinking we should have used the money to pay down cc bills or something like that. He kept telling me we deserved something new (most of our furniture is second hand) but I don't know.....I still feel guilty about it.
Answer:
A lot of times I get it before I even leave the store. I almost always go back through my basket and put back things I think I can live without. I think I learned it from seeing my mother do it when I was a child. She still does it too.
Answer:
I usually get it with smaller purchases because they are impulse buys. During the purchase, I start getting hot and nervous, like I know I'm doing something wrong. Then when I balance my checkbook and see the purchase, I really have remorse. Sometimes I take it back, other times, I'll keep it if is something we really need. With larger items like a car or home, we put a lot of thought into the purchase, so we know it was the right decision.
Answer:
I get it more with bigger items. I am still not sure buying this house and moving was a good idea. I am still waiting for it to come back and bite us!
Answer:
I'm like Happymom, i sometimes have buyer's remorse about buying this house. The utilities and taxes are higher than the old house, some months i wonder how we even get by?!!
Answer:
I am so with you on the putting it back. UGH. I learned it also from my mother. I now do what she did. I would look at it forever, put it in the cart continue to do more shopping for other " needed" items, and by the time we get to the register it is out of the cart. I SOOO do this. I don't know why. I have no trouble spending money on the kids clothes, or for the hubby just me and MY clothes..lol
Answer:
I am with Simplemom and Mommytimes2, I have a bad habit of putting things back that are for me. I can buy for the kids or dh without any remorse, just about myself. Dh always gets so aggrivated with me cause I will pick out something and by the time we reach the register it has already left the cart.
Answer:
OMG, I do that too! I can justify a few small treats or toys for my family but I always talk myself out of EVERYTHING I would like to have. Even stuff like a loaf of cinnamon raisin bread. I usually don't even get to the buyer's remorse stage because I put it back before it's bought. My husband has practically made me spend money a couple times (just $20 or so) when I'm really stressed and it really feels good when I don't overthink it and I know it's not bill money.
