Gluclose test

Ask:
I just found out this afternoon that I failed my gluclose test and now have to spend a morning to get retested. Has this happened to anyone? What does it mean for the baby? This is my 4th pregnanacy and this did not happen with the other 3. Any info. would be appreciated!
Answer:

Before I had my dd I worked in a lab in an OBGYN office. I gave the glucose tolerance tests as well as drawing blood work. Sometimes women can get results for reasons that are unknown or "fail" the test. Alot of times when they were retested things came back fine. When you take it again and if you get the same results try not to worry too much. The doctor will let you know what you need to do and it can vary from person to person and depending upon the results of the test. Just try not to worry too much. I know it may sound scary but in most cases even when you fail things are usually fine. HTH
Answer:

I know quite a few people this has happened to. But then they past the 3 hour test.

If you come back and fail the next time they will either have you fix your diet - and you will probably have to prick your finger to check your levels. Worse case you could end up on insulin- I think this is rare.

What it means for your baby - babies of diabetics tend to be bigger and can have complications from it, some even end up diabetic.

I am not trying to scare you just let you know what I have heard and learned. I am not a dr and may not have all the facts. Try to relax until your test, you will probably do fine the 2nd time around. But if not the dr will give you everything you need to know.

PS if you don't mind me asking what flavor did you take. My test is in a couple of weeks and they are giving me a choice of flavors. I am worried about passing mine as well.
Answer:

Choice of flavors???? Boy have things changed in just one year, I only had a choice of nasty orange!!!
Answer:

When I was working at the docs office they had orange and lemon/lime. They also had both of those when I was prego w/ my ds who is now 7. Do they have more flavors than that now or is it still the same two?
Answer:

I had failed my first test with both kids, but passed the second, longer ones. It's boring, but it's better than having a problem. Just take a good book to read.
Answer:

One way i've heard to pass this test is to stay away from carbs the night before and the morning of... just have a hard boiled egg or two... so your sugar levels aren't spiked going into it.. good luck!
Answer:

I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy. Mine was controlled through my diet. I didn't have to take insulin, but I did have to check my sugar levels 4 times a day. My son was born perfectly healthy! I was told by my doctors that the complications my son could have would be low blood sugar when he was born. Your body is not making enough insulin, so his little body is making more insulin to fight off the sugar. But when he was born they immediately took his sugar and it was fine. It really can be controlled. I know how scared you are. Good luck on your second test! Hugs
Answer:

Thank you for all the info. I go for my second glucose test this Friday. I have to fast for 12 hours so we'll see what happens.

I was given orange (disgusting) but no other flavors were offered.
Answer:

I guess I'm the lucky one here! I don't have to rink that nasty stuff before my test, I just have to follow a specific diet and eat it the morning before I go for my test.
