I need an extra $500 a month...

Ask:
Starting June 1..we are going to need about an extra 5-6 hundred dollars extra a MONTH. My time is VERY limited. As I am the primary caretaker for DD. We don't want to and can't afford daycare, and DH has a full plate with school full time and work full time. (doing summer school to get ahead on credit hours) I need something that will be fairly steady income, and yet allow me MAJOR flexibility. Also, Saturdays are out, as DD has soccer all summer and I really don't want to miss this.
Any ideas??

ETA: Oops! I accidentally said a week the first time I posted..Just switched it to "a month"
Answer:

I'm not trying to be a downer, but an extra $500 a WEEK? That's a full time salary for some. Plus, your stipulations make it very difficult. My initial thought was: nothing legal or would allow you time to sleep! What has happened that has put you in this position? You're right; it does sound like dh has a full plate, and you do, too, with being a mommy. That is in no way to be discounted. But you're talking $2,000 plus a month, and if any of us knew how to do that, I'm not sure we'd be here trying to mommysave.

And yes, if you do daycare, besides being unhappy about it, as you don't want to do it, VERY understandably, it would eat a huge amount into that amount; the cost of working would outweigh anything you made.

If you come up with a better solution, do share, but is there any way to get out of this additional $2K a month upcoming obligation?

WheeeeeeW! I'm so glad! I was worried! I wish I had a way of doing that, but I hope you can get some answers. A few years ago, dh delivered pizzas nights and weekends - about 2-3 days a wk, and made about $500 a mo. - tips is what they live on, really. He just prayed that he not meet up w/anyone from his job because he's a Sr. manager. Not for you, but better for a man. Can you do papers for college kids or type resumes for people? Can you offer to proof read for writers, including newsletter writers in your area or for a local newspaper? Do any business owners need you to do typing for them? Can you do layout or graphic design? Can you babysit? Can you share with us your past experience and past/current skills so we can help you brainstorm?

My job offers great flexability. I'm in direct sales. If you want more info PM me!

A mommy in our neighbourhood has opened up a long or short term care - basically babysitting for parents when they need to go do shopping, have a time out or go out in the evening. - Prehaps its an option for you as well - considering you are already looking after your daughter.

Not sure where you are from but i watch an infant three days a week and get paid about $500/month. Here in Ca that's the going rate.

When we adopted our youngest son ( from Guatemala ) we were short about $1700.00 at the very end of the process and had to come up with it rather quickly. This was in spring/early summer and I went to lots of yard sales at the end of the day and offerred to "take it all away" for a very low price..( like 5 or 10 dollars ) MANY people were happy to not have to pack it up again and take it to a thrift store so I got a LOT of stuff, most of it pretty nice.. THEN I had a big yard sale of my own, done up very nicely, very well organized, everything clean, clearly marked, etc and we made almost $2,000.00!!!!!
It was a lot of work, but it paid off and when you need it, you need it! I plan to do the same thing this year to make enough for our vacation NEXT summer...( the kids want to do Disney and that is SO expensive!) Good Luck!!

This is what I did for a while too. I baby-sat 3 days a week so I still had lots of time with my kids. It was a way of having the best of both worlds, an income and being at home. My dh is also a full time students and works. He was able to apply for some extra scholarships which have really been what has helped the most.

You can declutter and sell your unused stuff on Craigslist, I make hundrends every month on there. But it's not steady. You could do sales like Usborne books, avon, etc but quite honestly it doesn't sound like you want or have time for that kind of thing. I do part-time childcare, you can make more money babysitting and doing part-time care than full-time. Crazy, but it's true. The going rate for part time and occasional babysitting is higher. It's yard sale season now so you can have one of those for some quick cash.

Now I think your solution is easier than all of these, unless you are the most frugal person, I'm sure you can cut out at least a couple hundred somewhere. Lowering cable bills, phone bills, any extras, your GROCERY budget alone is the easiest to cut $!! Take a look at what your spending and see where you can par down!
