A 73-year-old woman is clinging to life after a fire ripped through a north London house early today.

It’s the second time this week someone has been killed or seriously hurt in a fire.

Firefighters were called to a semi-detached house at 38 Hawkesbury Ave. just after 2 a.m. today and found a woman sitting on the front steps outside and flames visible through a front window.

The woman, who was alone at the time, managed to escape the “extremely cluttered” house, said fire-department spokesperson Rick Jefferson.

“How she managed to escape amazes me,” he said.

Middlesex-London EMS took her to hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.

The fire was mostly contained to the living room, though an investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office is still probing the cause.

Jefferson said there were no smoke alarms in the house.

“We really don’t know what alerted her to the fire,” he said.

The cluttered house made it difficult for firefighters, hampering their efforts as they tried to fight the blaze that was quickly spreading.

The fire caused about $80,000 damage.

Answer:

This is scary! My dh grandma is 91 years old and her house is extremely cluttered. Im talking you can hardly move cluttered. We've tried to declutter it but its so bad that we didnt even make a dent. Plus her home is almost 100 years old and is not in good shape so if there were to be a fire her home would go up in flames fairly quickly. Makes me want to declutter even more so that when I am her age I dont end up in this situation.
