Just a sick of people vent

Ask:
I just have to vent! I am SO sick of people and their ignorant anti-homeschooling mumbo jumbo! I'm about ready to go live in a cabin in the woods, but then of course I'd be the secluded homeschooler the media portrays. And if one more person asks about socialization I'm going to throttle them! I'm not joking!

Can you tell I'm not in the best of moods?! LOL
Answer:

Can we join you in the cabin? lol.... I know it can be hard at times to deal with people. I think the socializing is the biggest thing people have trouble with. Thankfully my kids are around families that homeschool or families who use to. We have so much to do some weeks that on the weekends we just unplug and lay low. Or if the weekends are busy we try and do it during the week and if both are crazy which is usually the case, We grab any down time we can get. Just try and be patience with these people.

Blessings,
Karen

My kids are in public school, and that is our choice. I work full-time outside of the home, as DH does. Socialization is a big issue, but the biggest battle has been already won, in my opinion. You know socialization is important and coordinate that into your home-schooling. So, tell people to shut the H*LL up! JMO

Hang in there! If they weren't harping about socialization, they'd find something else to fuss about!

Vent when you need to. Then, know that you are doing a great job with your kids! My dad always told people (and he didn't HS), "You raise your kids, and I'll raise mine." That's kind of the stance I've taken on homeschooling. "You choose what's best for your kids, and I'll choose what's best for mine."

We're always hear to vent with!

Wow! I can't believe people are still that small minded. I don't homeschool but have a couple of friends who do. I've been very impressed with the coordinated groups and co-ops they are involved in! And most cities now offer organized sports during the day for homeschoolers. So unless you live in a secluded cabin in the woods, you probably have access to these kids of activities!

I agree...tell people to mind their own business!
Answer:

I was homeschooled in a secluded cabin in the woods, and (sorry) I would be one of the first people to harp on you about socialization. I didn't really get much, and when I got my GED and went to work full time at 16 I got a HUGE culture shock just from interacting with people all day long every day. It is SO important for kids to learn basic stuff like talking on the phone and ordering for themselves from a menu, not to mention playing with other kids and finding out what their own personal interests are.

I'm not saying that you need to do any of these things, and it sounds like your kids are very well adjusted. These are just things I really didn't get the chance to learn until my teen years. My mom had issues (obviously) and I'm still trying to get over some of the repercussions that affect me profoundly to this day.

I actually am open to homeschooling my DS because the education is at such a higher level, but he would have to be doing AT LEAST 2-3 other group activities per week and have a mandatory 1 or 2 close friends or I would stop and put him in public school.

So there's the 2-cents from the cabin in the woods!
