Fish Oil for Omega 3

Ask:
Does anyone give their child fish oil? I have read a lot about omega 3 helping kids w/ ADD and other such related problems. If you do, have you found it any form other than a large jell cap type pill? I can't imagine having a young child try to swollow something like that or swollowing nasty tasting liquid. Does it come in any yummy (or nonfoul) form?
Answer:

Yes! I do and I have been giving it to my son(who is 11) since last August. I buy it in a liquid form from my health food store, I pay around $7.00 and it last about 2 months or longer. I mix 2-3 teaspoons with fun yogurt....like the trix...it has funky and good flavors. We call it is brain food. I also give him a DMAE supplement. I have be very happy with the results.

Thank you!!!!

What is a DMAE supplement?
Answer:

Nordic has flavored fish oil gelcaps that are made for kids and are smaller. Just be SURE that you tell them the ingredients that you want. I got cod liver oil ones that didn't have everything that I wanted. You can get Nordic on line - I buy mine thru Kirkman Labs, because I get other vitamins for ds thru there, but I think Nordic also sells direct and also thru organic markets.

We use Nordic Naturals, also. Their fish oil is triple distilled so that there are no heavy metals. You can get it through Kirkmans but I have been buying it from The Vitamin Shoppe. My ADHD ds(7) takes the cod liver oil but my *very* picky NT dd(6) takes the Omega 3-6-9 Junior. It's naturally flavored with lemon. She was taking the Nordic Naturals DHA/EPA formula which is strawberry flavored but it didn't have all the Omega fatty acids that I wanted her to have.

I have tried the Nordic Naturals cod liver oil and it isn't too bad. If you drink something like orange juice right after there is no after taste. I would be taking it myself but it can be expensive (I think the reason Nordic Naturals is more expensive than your regular drug store fish oil is because it is triple distilled).

DMAE is a dietary supplement that enhances mental concentration. I check on my liver oil..it is a 12oz bottle with a slight mint flavoring and it was $8.95. I got it in January and I'm still using it.

I also give my son (almost 5) the Nordic Naturals Omega 3-6-9 Junior supplements - he is autistic. I have also read many articles on the benefits of flaxseed oil for children with ADD/ADHD. I got this pamphlet at Whole Foods: here is the link if you are interested -

I've tried that with my son as well, but we used a different brand the one in the link. We used Essential Balance, Jr. which comes in a butterscotch flavor and doesn't taste bad at all. It has the dosages listed on the back, and I just added it to my son's orange juice. I purchased at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section where many of the supplements were kept.

HTH!

I was actually just going to mention flax seed oil or just the ground up seeds for Omega-3's. You can sprinkle the seeds on cereal or put some in smoothies, etc. Some nuts (I'm thinking walnuts?) are also high in omega-3's. Good luck!
