So proud of my son!

Ask:
My ds is in kindergarten and at the beginning of the year he was having a very hard time with phonics and reading. I, also, was having a hard time because my dd had breezed through learning to read. Well, I just have to say that my son has caught on so well. It was like all of a sudden the light bulb flashed on and he has done extremely well since December. He is fluent with his reading and does not get frustrated if he does have to stop and sound out a word. It makes me so happy to see him progress and learn and, most importantly, enjoy learning.
Answer:

This is great, Julie!! My son, almost 7, is having a hard time reading, and I really think a lot is in his attitude. He just gets overwhelmed. But when he gets going, he's a little slow, but he can do it! And, best of all, he comprehends what he reads!

The phonics is a big thing. I was concerned about his reading, and in a meeting w/the school, they were saying that he sounds out words and knows his phonics, which is more than a lot of kids do, and that is a huge part of the struggle to learn to read. Where we're really having issues is in the "sight" words, as they call them these days. He sounds them out, but a lot of "sight" words are words that don't follow the conventional phonics rules.
