Ask:
I'm ready to make the switch- especially to organic, nontoxic dish washer detergent.
Anyone have any products in particular they love?
Thanks
Answer:
I want to know, too. I might have to do a side-by-side test.
For my birthday last month I bought myself a new bathing suit. The shop where I made the purchase recommended that I wash it ONLY in non-detergent cleaner. I bought a small bottle of hair shampoo they recommend but at $6 a pop, I'm looking for something else - even though I really do like what the shampoo does to my hair, DD's hair, and the idea it will preserve my INVESTMENT in the bathing suit (WHY are they so expensive!?!)
So today I went to the natural food store and picked up a bottle of non-detergent clothes wash. While I was there, I was looking at the non-detergent dishasher liquid. I'm thinking about it. I know regular dishwasher detergent and clothes washer detergent have chemicals in it that help keep the machine working. I'm concerned that using something more 'natural' may not be good for the equipment.
Like I said, I'll try a side-by-side test and post the results. If you find something out before then, please let us know.

I am discovering great uses for vinegar. I love it! It has taken scum off the glasses that go through the dishwasher, and is great for cleaning in general. Cheap, too.
Answer:
I have not yet tried any for the dishwasher but the April issue of Real Simple suggested these:
Ecover Ecological and Trader Joe's powders
There is a great article : Earth day, every day in this issue.
I also use vinegar and baking soda for a lot of cleaning tasks and Simple Green or Sun and Earth products. Simple Green is not all organic but is very earth and health friendly. Check out their website: Simplegreen.com

I like Melaleuca and Shaklee. Both are expensive. I've never bought them but my in laws and friends tend to get me that kind of thing as gifts. They know it's something I like and I just make things last a long time.

I like vinegar for lots of uses. I use strong vinegar water on my laminate floors as well as keeping a spray bottle of vinegar water around for countertops and faucets. How do you use vinegar in the dishwasher? Do you put it in the jet dry compartment? I would really like to try it.

I don't actually use it in the dishwasher, but use it on the drinking glasses that we regularly run throught the dishwasher that get hard water stains on them. I soak them in a vinegar/water solution (mostly vinegar) for a while and the scum comes right off.

I've read about making your own dishwashing det using washing soda, but for the life of me I have never been able to find it in any store. Supposedly Walmart or grocery stores carry it, but not mine.

Has anyone tried the Holy Cow products? I saw a blurb about them in Babytalk magazine and went to the website. The ad says they are :natural, nontoxic, organic, VOC free, biodegradable, and safe to use around babies and pets. From the website, it looks like they are mostly in stores on the west coast but it did say they were now available at most ACE Hardware stores. They are VERY reasonably priced too: $6.00 for a gallon if you order through the website, $3.00 for the spray bottles. I am going to check our ACE so I can avoid shipping costs if possible but i really do want to give it a try. They have a few different formulas.
