Air Filters/Purifiers

Ask:
We are thinking about getting air cleaners for the family room and the kids' bedrooms. All of my kids have allergies, and with all the stuff I see floating in the air when the sunlight streams in, I think that it would be helpful to everyone if we clean the air.

Does anyone have any particular experience or products that they think are helpful?

Thanks!!
Answer:

I checked into the cost of the individual units and for us, it wasn't worth it. Since we own our house, it was more cost-effective to purchase a whole house air cleaner that attached to our forced air furnace. If you don't have a forced air furnace or if you are renting, then the individual units are better for you.

There is an association of allergy and asthma website that recommends one portable air filter. My asthma doc highly recommends the website for the products he wants me to get. I'd have to try to find that link again.

Was it natlallergy.com? That is where I saw some that I really liked. The thing is that we need to concentrate on certain rooms more than others. Our family room and bedrooms have more concentration of stuff since we spend more time in there, so I really want to attack them the most.

I'm on my work computer right now and it doesn't have the link. I'll have to look on my other computer in a few minutes.

Jeanette, we had a thread on this recently in the Product Talk forum. The ozone/ultrasonic ones are not effective and can actually be dangerous. I have an expensive Honeywell one, and the filters are also very expensive - It did seem to work well, but how could we really tell? The stuff floating in the air, dust motes, are going to always be there, so I wouldn't judge by that - I can't remember the scientific explanation I read recently, but it made sense - unless you're in a hyperbaric chamber, you will get these. If your home is reasonably clean, as yours seems to be, I'm sure you'll be fine without this - in our case, we still had construction nearby and a new baby, plus persian cats, so I wanted to get rid of as much in the bedroom as I could.
