Ask:
I'm about to begin my first pinata. DH's family always made a pinata every spring around Easter, which I found out after I had decided to do one for DS. Anyway, I thought I'd do something simple this year and try an Easter egg. I blew up a balloon and I'm headed to make the paste (I got a recipe for the Best Paper Mache Paste Ever or something crazy like that from the Family Fun website). I have high hopes - wish me luck! I'll post a picture of the results in like 3 or 4 days when it's all done.

Good luck. we have done this many times for both of my dd's classes. They are fairly easy to do they just take a good while to dry completely. Have fun.

Good Luck! I can't wait to see how it turns out. What a fun idea!

I just made a sponge bob pinata for my dd's 2nd birthday. She love him... the only suggestion that I have is to not make it to thick or t he little one won't be able to break it. Have fun.

Well all the directions I've found have said to put on 3 layers of mache and then paint or tissue paper a layer. I was thinking I'd do 2 layers. Think that'll be enough resistance to withstand a few blows from the stick, but break without him having to go into a toddler meltdown? Or should I stick with the recommended 3 layers? DH told me of their first pinata - they didn't know how many layers to put on so they did like 6 or 8. He said it was the invincible pinata - they ended up taking off their blindfolds and beating it as hard as they could with baseball bats. Poor bird pinata.

We might have to wait until later in the week, as its supposed to be cold here too (like 45). I got the first layer on last night - let me tell you, that World's Best Paper Mache Recipe is exactly that! I've done paper mache before (not a pinata, but other stuff), and this mache I'm using is hands down a million times better than anything I've ever used. It goes on smooth, no bumps, and dries evenly and quickly. I used a foam brush, painted on some mache, laid the strip and painted over it. It went quickly and so smoothly -- I'll never do mache any other way again!! Here's the recipe for it if anyone wants to write it down for future reference:
Combine 1/2 cup all-purpose flour and 2 cups cold water in a bowl. Add this mixture to a saucepan of 2 cups boiling water and bring it to a boil again. Remove from the heat and stir in 3 tablespoons of sugar. Let it cool; it will thicken as it cools. Once it does, it's ready to use.
[This all-purpose recipe will work for any project. Looking for some good ones? You and your kids can try whipping up a batch of puppet pals, a bowl of faux fruits, or a super-easy hot air balloon piñata (the perfect decoration for any birthday party). Whatever you create, remember to make only the amount of papier-mâché paste you need. Even in the refrigerator, paste spoils quickly.]
