Help, Reluctant DH

Ask:
My DH is unsure about homeschooling. He thinks that teachers at local schools can do a better job because they have a college education. I think we can offer them more than being stuck in a class with many other children, getting minimal attention compared to what they would receive at home with me. Socialization won't be an issue, we already do Gymnastics on Monday and Saturday, playgroup on Wednesday.

I just don't know what to do for lesson plans and what they need to learn at what stages.

Has anyone encountered this issue? If so, what have you done?

I used to work w/ a mom who had home schooled her daughter she finished school, then onto college. There are so many benefits to it, I would love to at least try it.

Any suggestions?
Answer:

My dh was unsure too, in fact he probably still is he just knows better than to get me started on that topic! LOL
I recommend you BOTH read Mary Pride's Guide to Getting Started in Homeschooling. It is the best book for researching Hs and answers any/all ? you might have. There are also several Homeschooling Dad's books on the market though most are very Christian oriented.
Also, look into homeschooling groups in your area, if your husband would go with you to these groups and meet/talk with other HS dads that would help.
World Book online has a section about what to learn at what age, etc
Also, "What your ___ needs to know" by Hirsh (I'm probably spelling his name wrong) is great. We are in K right now, but I've already got 1st grader and 2nd grader volumes as well. Love those books.
You can buy your materials pre made or make your own, so you don't have to know everything you teach. You will be learning with your child. As they get older they can take video/internet classes, co-ops, college classes, etc to learn their upper math/science classes that are difficult for most parents to teach.

Just b/c the teacher has a college degree doesn't mean they are more qualified to teach your children. I have a teaching background and most teachers are wonderful people, but not all and getting fewer by the year it seems. The degree in education teaches mostly how to handle a class room of students, disciplining, etc. They have to read up and learn the material they teach year to year just like you would.

Another great way to show your dh how your local schools stack up is to look up the stats on your local school system and show him how it compares. I know when I showed my dh the cost of private school and then mulitiplied that by 3 he stopped asking me why I was spending so much on home materials!
Answer:

I looked up all the schools in my are and all but 1 are ranked as being on academic watch-that helped dh but my husband is like the last girls who posted...he'll avoid getting me started at ALL costs!!!
