Ask:
My dh gets tired of not having any cash in his pocket, in the event he'd like to purchase a breakfast burrito once a week, or eat out once a week. Does anyone here do allowances? I am thinking of $10 per week each for both of us. This way I could get coffee if I want to, and he can get his breakfast burrito. Doesn't mean we have to spend it but just knowing we CAN and that there's a limit might help. I know that adds up to $80 per month, but we should be allowed special treats every now and then , right?
Answer:
I give my DH an allowance. Usually it's $20 a week - he is a smoker, so that's for his smokes, pop, eating out if he wants, etc. If i know he needs to put gas on his car, then i give him alittle extra.
I don't think having an allowance is a bad thing. I think we all need alittle money to spend on ourselves.
Answer:
Just budget it and do what you can afford. Just because you allow for it doesn't mean it has to be spent. He's an adult and SHOULD be able to have a little cash and do things here and there.
Answer:
we usually both have about 20 a week on us...also good to have some cash for emergency situations
Answer:
Yes, even though we're trying to be debt free, what's the use if we can't have special treats once per week?! And if we have cash as an allowance, it's easier not to overspend with the debit card. And it's true, just because we have it doesn't mean we have to spend it. I can even put mine in a jar and see what goes from there!
Answer:
I would never think of giving my dh an allowance. He works and earns the money and is a responsible adult, so I just assume he's mature enough to know how much money we can afford for him to spend. Now if he suddenly started blowing money wildly, I might feel differently, but I don't tell him what he can spend, and he doesn't tell me.

That is great. I wish more would have this attitude and relationship.

Answer:
I feel the same way. He works hard for me to be able to stay home all day. He gives me all the money to pay the bills and savings account and such. I get my spending money and he never questions what I buy because he knows that I am frugal and don't make large impulse purchases. The money left from his check is his. He uses it to eat out, buy gasoline, clothes occasionally etc. He usually ends up handing me a little extra too to either save or buy something for me and Simon. It just works for us.
