The Construction-themed Party

Ask:
When my son turned 2, we turned our house into a construction site. I visited a local construction equipment rental store and bought a flashing barricade and a large orange cone. This cost approximately $ 60. We bought all of the party goods & decorations (including yellow & black construction tape) online from Birthday Express. We set up the barricade outside & decorated inside with orange cones (large and small). We hung strips of construction tape on the entrance to our kitchen--to deter people from coming into it--and we built a "dining cart" to block the other side (from the dining room). It was patterned after those silver bullet-shaped diners from the 1950s & 60s.

Our menu included typical lunch cart fare (inexpensive, too!!!):

steak sandwiches
hot dogs
meatball sandwiches
ham & cheese sandwiches
bags o' chips
dill pickles

Guests were encouraged to line up at the "lunch cart," place their orders and then take a seat in our dining room--where I then delivered their meal. Everyone loved it & overall, it was fairly inexpensive!

A construction them is what my 5yr old and I decided to do for my ds who will be 2 in June. Both boys LOVE construction vehicles right now. Where in the world do you get the little orange cones? I love the flashing barricade too, great idea! So cute. I told my ds he can help me decorate his brother's cake too. I know Walmart has a bag of construction guys/trucks/cones (mini mini size) for like $1.97 that we are going to use on the cake, with crushed Oreo's as the dirt. Then we'll get some dump trucks and things to hold the snacks on the table. I want to get some caution tape too to decorate with. You did a really good job!

I bought the miniature cones through Birthday Express (online) as well as the caution tape--you can also find miniature orange cones with the soccer balls in sports stores and even at Target!!
