Spitting Up Issues

Ask:
OK, thanks to you all who responded to me before about trying to get my baby to sleep in the bassinet. He does now, which is good.

Here's my newest problem: Now that he's a few weeks old he's eating more at each feeding (and letting me sleep 3 hours at a time sometimes!). But he's also spitting up a lot more. If I get up to feed him at night and then put him right back down, it sounds like he's pretty uncomfortable--gurgling, coughing, gagging, sptting, etc. So am I supposed to sit up with him for awhile after he eats to keep him upright for a bit? Or should I try propping him up a little in his bassinet? Or just not worry about it? and yes, I do burp him after nursing.

Your advice would be much appreciated, thanks!
Answer:

Are you breast feeding or bottle feeding? It could be his fomula needs to be changed or that he is allergic to something you are eating. I would discuss it with the dr.

If he is only a few weeks old waking up every 2-3 hours to feed in the night is normal. I have to agree with it might be something you are eating. I had this problem with my dd. We found out after she was misdiagnosed like many are with acid reflux. I was eating peanuts which was really hard on her tummy and it gave her gas pains and she would spit up alot!! Once I cut out the peanuts she did much better. I don't have parents of my own to talk to about childrearing so I often tell my husband I am being parented by google. Cause even to this day if I have any issues I google it!! !!

I am breastfeeding. And it doesn't seem like there is any pattern to what I'm eating compared to how he does. Hm. But if you all think it's worth asking the doctor about, then I probably should. Thanks.

It could be acid reflux...but ask the doctor. You could try putting a towel or something UNDER the mattress in the bassinet to prop it up a little bit. They also sell those "wedges" to prop up the baby. But ask your doctor first.

I know exactly what you're talking about and no, I wouldn't worry about it - although it never hurts to discuss it with your pediatrician. Both my boys spit up A LOT (what seemed like entire feedings sometimes) and both did the gurgling and spitting up thing at that age. Both were also breast fed. Neither had acid reflux. Although there could be something else going on, it's very likely that your baby is completely normal (he just spits up). My pediatrician told me it was nothing to worry about. I didn't stress about keeping them upright for awhile after feedings nor did I elevate the head of the mattress while they were sleeping - although both of these things might help a little. The frustrating part was having to change the bassinet sheets all the time (and having to clean spit-up out of their hair the next morning). They both stopped the spitting up at night after awhile (I don't remember exactly when) but continued the day time spitting until between 9 and 12 months.

One word of advice if you do have a spitter - don't go anywhere without a burp cloth (and one or two spares)!
Answer:

my son too had the acid reflux and they can give you stuff for that...I would definately put a call in to the Dr.....cant hurt.

Maybe also try patting a little longer...maybe just more BURPS in there...worth the try.
Answer:

all great advice, I would just add that sometimes spitting up is totally normal,as long as it isn't projectile vomiting.I would ask my Dr. if he thinks it could be acid reflux, and get his opion on what to do for your baby...
*also next time it happens even if the baby burped, pick him up and burp him again. sometimes a baby wont burp completely,it may work and then again it may not buts its worth a tryALSO if your breastfeeding some mom's use gripe water, I am not very familiar with it as I have medical issues where I can not BREASTFEED...
good luck hope you find a solution soon

I've been having this problem with my nine week old since birth. He vomits *all* the time. You should see my shirt at the end of the day! Anyway, I talked to my Dr. about it last week and he said that to get the milk to stay down, I can pump it and then mix it with rice cereal. About 2 oz. milk to 1 oz. cereal, and then feed it with a bottle. Sounds like too much work to me, so I guess I am just going to deal with it and ride it out. They outgrow this reflux thing usually in a couple of months.

Just a tip in case you're still bringing him into bed with you at night...a waterproof sheet works awesome to avoid having to change your sheets all the time. I just put the baby on it and he barfs on that instead of my sheets. I've also covered some of my furniture with blankets so I can sit on it and nurse without worrying about him throwing up all over it.

No, my little guy isn't quite that bad. Thank you all for your input. My theory right now is that maybe he has a dairy allergy. Since the original post he's developed a stuffy nose and mucus will sometimes come out with the spit-up. I looked it up online and his symptoms are consistent with allergic reactions to milk. So I'm going to abstain from dairy for a little bit to see if it makes a difference. It seems strange to me, though, that it would only be starting now, since I've always eaten a lot of dairy products, all through the pregnancy and since his birth. Anyway, I'll see how he does tonight (last night was rough... but then again I had cheese tortellini and a glass of milk for dinner) and probably call the doctor tomorrow.
