To rent or not to rent

Ask:
My DH is pondering on if we should rent a car to take on vacation. I would perfer not to, but I can see where he is coming from. We have a Blazer (1996)- it only has 93,000 miles on it- for the most part it runs like a champ but he thinks that there is issues with the tranny. Occasionally- there is a soft slip from 1st to 2nd- that mainly happens when he drives (which is anytime we go anywhere as a family) and to be quite frank- he is hard on vehicles. So it is one of the things where I am teetering on- I don't want to drive over 600 miles and have something happen to it (God forbid if that should happen), but I would rather spend the extra money towards our vacation. For an Impala it would cost about $200 for the week- we would prefer an SUV or a van- (it would give more space and feel like our normal vehicle- but the Impala should have enough space)- but it would probably cost a lot more than that, but the gas mileage would probably be better with the Impala. So what is your opinions?
Answer:

I would get a cheap rental car with good gas milage - but I'm really cheap. SUV's are roomy but if it's just the 4 of you a sedan with a trunk should be fine.
Answer:

I would see the cost of fixing the transmission and decide from there. It could be an easy fix.

Ditto
Answer:

My cousin said that the transmission is fine- eventually we will need to overhaul it (my family is full of mechanics). He said it should be okay to take on vacation- but if we are worried about it he told us to put a good 300 miles on it within a week before vacation and if it acts up with that don't take it. We are planning on replacing the tranny no matter what next year though- so we'll see.
Answer:

you could also google for car coupons for the rental place you would consider using.
Answer:

A quick look at kayak.com reveals that a mid-sized car would be about $25 / day. A full-sized SUV would be $128 / day! Insurance and other fees can add about 30% to those quotes.

If I were in your position, I'd research how much it would cost to rent and compare that how much it would cost to repair.
