Ask:
so my fiance got injured at work, so he will be out of work for about 6 weeks... no pay or anything. he filed a claim with workman's comp, but it usually takes about 4-6 weeks to come through, and then it is only 70% of his income recovered. so basically, we have absolutely no money until the middle of may. on the good side, before this happened, i went shopping and stocked up on some things, but i dont know if there is enough to last us for 5 weeks. i have my pay, but i usually clear 1000 a month. our rent alone is 900 lol... we're screwed. so, i will be able to get milk once a week, and that is about it. any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
also, i have never gone to the food bank before... if someone needs it, how do you go about getting those services? thanks
Answer:
Oh no! That's gonna be tough but i'm sure you can do it! No idea about food banks and the like, but i'm sure you'll qualify.
I would try to make up weekly meal plans and stick to them.. try to use less meat than you usually do, eat lots of pasta/rice/eggs..
Do you not have any savings or anything you can dig into? A credit card you could use for groceries only during this time?? Do you have any items around the house you could Ebay for some extra cash?
Hang in there!!
Answer:
I just noticed you're in Canada too.. if you PM me your mailing addy and I can send you a couple coupons for free food products I have.. one is for an Idaho potato product, one for crackers, not sure what else I have kicking around but i'll check.

You might try getting a part time job in addition to your regular job. m $1,000.00 a month is not going to cut it when your rent is 900.00. Maybe you could have a garage sale or sell something on ebay. Do you know anybody that would pay you to clean their house? You really don't want to let yourself get so far behind that you can't catch up.
Answer:
If you can't get a secondary job outside the house, can you babysit/do childcare in your home? Check your area for an Angel Food Ministries site (angelfoodministries.com) - it is a church ministry that sells food boxes for $25 with about $50 worth of food in them. The menu of food in the boxes is on their site too. Check that out - it could help you out a LOT with your food.

This is a good idea! Try in home daycare if you can, or maybe cleaning houses on the side for that extra $. These angel food ministries are a good thing. I think there is a church around here that does this! Good luck-hopefully the workmans comp will kick in earlier!
Answer:
To get food at our local food bank all you have to do is go there and give them some info why you need the help. they also refer you to other agencies that could be of assistance.
Best wishes

Check out She has an Emergency menu that is quite frugal. She also has a Beginner Bread recipe that I've used as my first bread recipe and it turned out really good. It only cost me pennies to make. has some great recipes that are inexpensive, too. She has a lot of bean recipes that are super cheap to make, but really good. I made the Red Beans and Rice and it cost me 1/2 lb of sausage and that's all. My family really liked it, even my 1 year old.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Is there anything that you can sell to get us some quick cash, at least enough for food? I like the part time job idea too. Is there somewhere you could work like 10-15 hours a week for a month or two? Good luck. I hope you can find a way to make it work.

I am not sure about Canada but here in the US in situations like this, you can go to the food stamp office for emergency help. Maybe someone here can let us know about Canadian government...
