Ask:
Can you believe that I closed 4 accounts at a bank today and they never asked for my ID or any type of proof that I was who I claimed to be? After opening a new account at another bank I waited a month to let checks clear, etc and then went in to close the accounts today. I handed the teller a piece of paper with the 4 accounts I wanted to close out and asked for cashiers checks. She said ok and handed me over $6000.00 without asking me a single question. She never asked me my name, address or for any ID. Is this common practice? Anyone could do that, wow, just too easy. Thanks for letting me vent!
Answer:
I would call the bank manager. Even if the checks were made out to you, it's still an issue.
Answer:
Wow! I have always had to show ID. Even to cash a check made out to me they want something w/ pic on it. That is a bit scary to think that s/one could just come in w/ account numbers and close them out.
I'd say something- maybe the teller recognized you??
Answer:
I bank at a local credit union and though it's pretty big a couple of the ladies remember me and never ask for id, so I guess I wouldn't think much of it in that case. Now I am at the bank we use for work daily, sometimes twice a day, and all the ladies there know me by name, but they still have to ask for id if I get cash for anything, because they have to document it on the check, so maybe it depends on the bank, too.
But do you think the teller recognized you or not? That would be my concern. If you don't think you were recognized, I'd definitely be on the phone to the manager. I mean, yes, you have cancelled your accts and w/drawn your money from there, but as easy as it was, anyone else in the world could have done that to your accts--and that's definitely not right! Your call may prevent identity theft/fraud for someone else!

I was wondering that as well... I know at my bank(s) there are always different tellers so even if I want to cash a $10 check made out to myself I have to show picture ID. I would definitely be placing a call to the branch manager, just to be on the safe side, like Jessica said, that call may prevent identity theft /fraud for someone else!

I had something similar happen to me but It could be much worse. When I got married I went to the Social Security office to legally change my name and they never asked me for ID. All I did was go in and tell them my SS# and what I wanted my new name to be and that was it. I couldn't believe it. No wonder there is so much Identity theft. I would definately talk to the bank manager and find out what their policy is.
Answer:
i would definately make a call maybe it was an isolated thing with just one paticular employee but it should be brought to there attention. i worked many years at a credit union and we had to write in the system what we saw if it was a drivers liscense(with the state) military id non driver id ect. and if there was an error and you did not follow procedure you were written up and punished for it.. so definately make the call.
Answer:
I used to work at a credit union and what that teller did was a big NO NO! Anytime we hand out over $2500 in cash, we need a supervisor's approval. Anything less, we still need to see ID. When a regular customer wants a small amount of cash, I don't usually check ID bec I've already seen it. However, if that customer were to withdraw a large amt of money, I would still have to see it again. Definitely talk to that person's supervisor--sounds like sloppy and potentially irresponsible work ethic.

I work at a bank we go by a If we know you basis I know alot of people that probaly dont know me. If she got cashiers checks didnt she have to have them approved by a higher authority?? I think what she did is a no no though
Answer:
I'm glad to hear this is not normal practice. I tried to get my dh to call and ask why the account was closed and who closed it but he wouldn't. I thought I'd let you know that, that was the first time I had ever stepped in that particular branch. We moved here about a month ago, so no she could not have recognized me. The supervisor was helping the teller to close the accounts, I guess two people must authorize it, but neither of them asked me a single thing. I think I will call this afternoon. Thanks!
