School Police Officer

Ask:
Our school district is hiring a police officer for the jr/sr high. Drugs are rampant in our high school, lots of teen pregnancies, fights and such. I saw a cop speed by me with his lights on yesterday and go to the high school, yet the police report never mentioned it. Everything is hidden for some reason. You have to know someone who goes there to find anything out. My kids are in elementary school, but I have great concerns about them attending the jr/sr high here. Do you think having inschool police officers will help clean up the school?
Answer:

Well I live in an excellent school district and they do have a police officer there all day at the HS (4000+ kids), and I'm not sure if it's full time or not, but I know there's one assigned to my ds middle school also. Ours aren't there to "clean up" the school, but to provide safety and protection for the students and staff. I feel better knowing that they're there in case there's ever a problem. They also do lots of education regarding safety, prevention of drug & alcohol abuse, etc. I know they have also met with groups of kids when there have been problems. So I see them only in a positive light. So I don't feel negatively about them being there, but I WOULD feel negatively if our school had lots of problems (not about the police, but about the school).
Answer:

We have 2 resorce workers at the high school here. Our school system is very good tho.I like having the resource workers there because when the students need someone to talk to their there.Parents now days are way too busy to do their job.
Answer:

I don't know if they're getting one to actually clean up the school as I said. I'm just hoping it will help get the kids in line. I'm hoping by the time my kids get up there that things will have changed from what they are know. When I was in high school, 15 years ago, drugs weren't even an issue and the thought of a police officer in school was insane, because it wasn't needed. I guess the world is changing every year. I hope it starts heading in a positive direction in our jr/sr high as well as others. I guess you can't shield your kids from everything, but I'd sure like to try.
Answer:

Our HS when I was growing up had 2 security guards, but not a police officer. If my child felt safer in school than I'm all for it. I think it would be cheaper to have a security guard who can call the police when they believe something illegal is going on.
Answer:

Our local high school also has security officers on duty, plus the police department has a station in the high school building. I have mixed feelings about that- if there wasn't a problem, or the very real possibility of a serious problem, would they be there?
Answer:

The high school I went to had several full time cops and it was a "good" school at the time. It's horrible now I hear. I would be surprised at this day in age if a high school didn't have a police officer on duty!

This is exactly what I was going to say.

I remember when I was in school we had "Officer Friendly". A cop that was at the school all the time...and we learned safety rules from "Ike the Bike". We loved Officier Friendly!!
