Does this sound like colic to you?

Ask:
I earlier had problems with my baby being constipated, but it seemed to get better but then instead of pooping in the morning he was starting to poop later and later in the evening, around the same time he started to cry in his sleep which I put off as bad baby dreams.

This past week he caught a cold and his nose was stuffy so while he was awake he would cry alot, now that it's clearing up he's still crying pretty much the whole day but sometimes it's a painful cry and he scrunches his legs up to his abdomen, but his stomach doesn't feel hard when I touch it but he does tighten the muscles in it a lot. And I do note that his crying and fussing finally stops after he's had a movement and he stops crying when I put a warm cloth over his belly.

To me it seems like his stomachs upset but when I called his Ped. he just said that it's colic. I thought colic was just a spell that lasted anywhere from minutes to an hour not all day
Answer:

I know you've had some gas troubles. Colic CAN last for many hours during the day. In my experience, my child had food allergies but my pediatrician first "blew" it off as Colic. Did you try Gripe Water or Gas Drops yet? In those first few months you will find the poop schedule will change, but it shouldn't disturb him so much.

Have you tried doing some elimination, like changing formulas, or if you are breast feeding too, changing your diet? It can take a while to see a difference. Keep in mind that about 1/2 the children who are sensitive to milk are also sensitive to Soy, so if switching to Soy doesn't work, try a hydrolyzed protein instead. (Keep your Ped posted on your choices though)

Did you try the Good Start? It helped alot of my friends who had babies with digestive issues-and it's not expensive!

Good luck, I hope you can get some rest soon. I remember those days VERY well, but they do pass! Your little guy is soooooo cute, he just can't be fussy all the time!
Answer:

I've started trying the Enfamil Gentlease since it has 1/4the lactose and the whey is partially broken down so it's supposed to be easier for babies to digest, I'm not sure if that's what it is since no one in my family or the fathers is lactose intolerant. So this changing of formula may be adding to the stomach problem.

I have read lots of negative things about the soy and that alot of babies end up developing an allergy against peanuts so I'm not wanting to try that but I haven't heard of the other one you suggested.

I haven't tried the Nestle formula yet...
Answer:

I feel for you, it's really tough to solve these mysteries! And I can identify with the worry that all the changes may be adding to the problem-and you might be right. I worry about too much soy too, it seems very hard to make good food choices today...
Nutramigen and Alimentum are examples of the hydrolyzed protein formulas I mentioned.

Has anyone mentioned it could be reflux? Some helpful things for that are the Mylicon Gas Drops, elevating the bed, shorter-more frequent feedings etc.

I hope you have some luck. If you feel like experimenting any more with food, I would try to get it out of the way sooner than later. As the babes grow older, they can become picky-especially about the hydrolyzed proteins (Like Nutramigen or Alimentum). They are not too tasty.

Stick with it, eventually there will be a peaceful night! You are doing a great job documenting what is going on, and taking notice at the changes. Keep on your Pediatrician if he isn't offering any solutions though, Colic seems to be a blanket diagnosis for "I don't know" sometimes.

You'll get it worked out!
Answer:

My oldest son could not take regular formula, he had an allergy to milk, so he had to take soy. My youngest started getting consitpation, and had colic, from the time he was 3 weeks old. We also put him on soy milk. we never had any problems from it, and my kids have no food allergies. My oldest son can even take milk now. At this age, it is all trial and error. You have to just have to figure out what works for your baby, as all children are different. Good luck and big !

It sounds like he is having a gas problem...without changing formula's or giving him anything to bring it up...here are some suggestions that have worked for me...

One thing you can try is after the morning or afternoon feeding - when he starts feeling cranky (crying) (I don't know how old he is...he looks pretty young)...but maybe sit him in a luke warm tub. The warm water may help him move his bowels earlier in the day. My DD had a problem with moving her bowels and this is what we did...it helped a lot and kept her happy for the rest of the day.

Also, try giving less ounces of formula at a time...do 1 - 1 1/2 oz and then burp him and make certain he his getting all the gas up...then continue feeding doing the same thing...1 - 1 1/2 oz then burp.

Something else to consider...if he is taking a pacifier...that can also cause gas because babies suck air in and don't know enough to let it out.

I hope this helps and you discover what is making him so unhappy...keep up with the doctor...sometimes they just don't want to take the time to help!!

My daughter now 6 months was colicy for her first 3. They will usually have a time of day that that are inconsolable hers way 8 at night to about 11. She would arch her back and pull her knees in. We changed her formula to simalac alimentum its a hypoallergenic formula which is easier to digest it is expensive but worth it in my opinion and some insurances pay for it. She is now an extremly happy baby. Also we use the avent bottles. Little tummies gripe water was also a big help they sell it at th babies r us by me.
Answer:

also my dr told me they cry more when stuffy bc they cant breath through there mouths yet unless they cry
Answer:

I would also suggest trying the mylecon drops. My daughter was very gassy ans would get very cranky. I thought it was colic until I started using the drops. She was fine after the drops.

Bicycle his legs. Consider putting him on Good Starts. The other thing I did was when diva acted like that, I'd sit her up and burp her. Almost immediately I got a burp. Pull his legs up to his tummy to try to get him to let the air out his butt (yes, a fart). It's hard to believe, and it's horrible now, but it will get better and he won't remember it. I actually had to get an antispasmodic rx for ds when he had these problems. Not the best solution, but the only way for us for a short period of time. It had pheno-barbitol in it, and a little alcohol, so it helped him sleep, but it was only for when it was at its worse. This was before I discovered Good Starts. It wasn't perfect w/Good Starts, but much improved.
