Help! What are your favorite food buys at Costco

Ask:
I'm making a trip to Costco this weekend to stock up on food. I've only purchased bulk packaged items before (applesauce, cereal, tuna fish, soup).

What are your favorites from the food section? I'm especially interested in items I can turn into meals. Frozen meats, chicken, breakfast items. Any good buys I should be on the lookout for?
Thanks.
Jenn
Answer:

I haven't found anything there I don't like yet!
Answer:

I really like their toilet paper. It's so soft and the rolls are so big I hardly ever have to change them.
Answer:

I'm not as crazy about their produce, but like the frozen things a lot. My ds loves the buffalo chicken bites.
Answer:

We love their chicken potpie and the stuffed shells that are in the freezer section. Also they have great prices on fresh salmon. I just cut it up into single serving fillets and freeze them in batches of 3-4. They have great rottisserie chicken also, that I shred for chicken salad, chicken caeser salads, and sandwiches.

We used to get Morningstar soy sausages their, sometimes a few other odds and ends, GREAT price on Monringstar. 6 pack/ 8 pack of cans in a package that could be a good deal - tuna, chickn broth, tomatoes, veggies, etc. Produce - Some stuff is just to big for our household, but sometimes a flat of strawberries, bagged salad mix, pineapple, avocados, onions, potatoes.

They have a lot of organics as well. Frozen meats and meals seemed over priced, on the surface a good price, but I also know that watching sales could get me a better deal.

Good luck

I wish we had a Costco!!! We have nothing like it or Sams. That would help my bills so much.

We are planning a trip this weekend too!!

We love the tyson frozen Chicken Breasts. (Boneless skinless)
Ground Beef
frozen brocolli (that is about the only veggie that everyone likes so we eat a lot)

And then I split everything into ziploc bags when I get home.

I agree about the produce...I don't usually get it there....we don't eat it fast enough.

I've noticed the grocery inventory at Costco will vary, depending on your location but this is what we stock-up on at our Costco ...

- Odwalla orange juice. This is oj that my DD asks to drink daily. A gallon jug at Costco costs LESS than a quart jug at my local grocery store.

- Noah's Bagels.

- The All American Chocolate Cake. For $14.99 this is an AMAZING cake. It is the cake that my hubby requests for his birthday. We can't possibly eat it all so I slice what is left and freeze it.

- The lattice crust apple pie. This is MY treat. No one else in the household likes apple pie so, as above, I slice it and freeze it.

- Frozen skinless, boneless chicken tenders.

- Frozen Italian meatballs.

- We have a rice cooker and make rice every week so I buy Costco's Jasmine rice.

- Many of their breads and tortillas are good. Unfortunately, they carry DD's favorite brand of bread BUT not the right flavor.

- I will buy some of Costco's fresh meat, poultry and fish (they have amazing deals on salmon) but it is more of a treat than a stock-up item. The other week we had their flank steak and portabello mushroom rolls and they were very good. But for $13 for three servings, it was too pricy to do that all the time.

- I'm really picky about fresh produce and I hate buying it in bulk packs. I will sometimes buy their flats of strawberries or small crates of tangerines but I have a great produce stand that will often beat them on price so I go there instead.

I don't buy cold breakfast cereal or Kraft Mac N Cheese at Costco. I can find it cheaper at other stores. BTW, the same goes for batteries (Home Depot has them cheaper and in smaller packages) and DVDs.

I have bought the salt and pepper grinder containers. My salt and peppers grinders always break or get dull so the idea of having a grinder that gets changed everytime I purchase more salt and pepper is appealling to me.

I have gotten into the habit examining other people's shopping carts. It seems the people who look at their ideal weight and healthy, have more interesting things in their shopping cart - not just junk foods. Why do I go through the same store aisles as they do and NOT see all the healthy, gourmet foods that they have in their carts? With that in mind, I calmly go through the aisles one more time purposely to look for healthier selections.

Costco is one of those stores where it really helps to have a price book. With the bulk items, it is difficult to figure out if you're getting a good deal or not. Some of their prices are terrific. Other times, they are way over priced.
Answer:

We buy the Tyson frozen meats- buffalo bites, teriyaki chicken, breasts, etc. DH likes them a lot and they are easy to make into meals

Also, meatballs
