Ask:
Has anyone ever done this? Was it hard? Would you do it again or hire it out?
We have old old old hardwood under our carpet and are looking at exposing them. Some the of the areas are in rough shape. Just wondering what kind of a project we would be taking on.
Answer:
WE have done that in our upstaris!! it is not easy but not as hard as we thought!!
I have not actually refinished dd's rooms but have used this stuff called REjunvinate! No sanding is needed!! and that has looked really nice!! but our Living room had to be sanded since the carpet pad stuck to the floor too much!!
(Oh yea the rejuvinate worked REALLY well it blends in with the refinished floor!! and cannot tell)
Answer:
My sister did it and it seemed like a huge undertaking to me...it's just not something I would do myself, it just depends on the person. I 'm super picky about what I want, it would be worth the money to me to have someone do it to my specifications.
Answer:
About 90% of our main level has hardwood floors. We re-did them about 6 yrs ago when we remodeled. Yes, we hired out. It's actually a good thing we did--the second coat they put on wouldn't dry, then dried and bubbled. They ended up coming back and re-doing it. They actually completed the job much faster than we could have.
Answer:
The woodwork all over our house is dark, so I was quite surprised to see blond oak hardwood floors under the carpets. I want to refinish them to match the woodwork but DH doesn't have the desire to take on the project nor pay anyone to. Very frustrating since he is a contractor
Answer:
I would hire out. The house before this one, we had all the hardwood floors redone before we moved in. They were beautiful and shiny until the day we moved out years later. On the other hand I have a friend that her dh did theirs, and I think the finish is somewhat uneven (shinier some places, duller some places). I just think it's hard to do a really good job unless you've done it before.
Answer:
We did our own floors 8 years ago and they came out beautiful!
We had dust everywhere!! It was a huge project. We lived on our 3 season porch and my dd stayed at my moms.. If we had the money we would have hired someone!
Answer:
We hired out, it really is a huge undertaking. I would recomend getting a couple of estimates.
Answer:
we did it ourselves and saved TONS of money! Here's the catch - it makes a ton of dust. We weren't living in the house at the time so it was okay for us - everything needed a thorough cleaning anyway.
It wasn't that difficult though. The upright floor belt sander was surprisingly easy to use - I'm not that strong or handy... The smaller circular sander took alot of muscle - sore the next day.
Took about 4-6 coats of poly which we did over a weeks time. Smelled alot, but we weren't living there so we didn't care as much. It'll smell no matter who does it. you may want to camp out at a friends.
It took us a weekend to sand 3 bedrooms and a great room and 1 week to poly.
They came out GREAT!
Would we do it again? Well, probably not because we aren't as young as we once were
