Ask:
I exchange Christmas gifts with a few girlfriends I used to work with. While we never set a dollar limit on our gifts, we try to keep them in the $10-15 range.
A local gift shop that I just love is having a huge going out of business sale. By next weekend everything will be at least 75% off. If I pay $10 for a $40-ish dollar item, is it appropriate to bring it to our Christmas exchange?
I guess the real question is, do you consider the value of the item or what you paid for it?
Answer:
I consider the value of the item. I buy things on sale and on clearance through out the year. I very rarely pay full price for Christmas or birthday gifts.
Answer:
I go buy tha value of the item. But since you are supposed to sort of keep it around a certain amount I would say as she opens it I got a reaaly good deal so the person doens't feel like she should have spent more.

Answer:
Well if a friend and I were spending $40 on each other and I found something for $10 that was marked down from $40...I'd buy it for her but I'd buy her $30 worth more of stuff til I 'spent' $40. So I think if you find something on sale, so be it! But that's me. That's how I've always done it.
Answer:
I go pay what I paid for an item. I love to give nice gifts and I can afford to do that if I am able to get them on sale!!!!
Answer:
I would use the gift and just let the person know that you got it for a discount so she didn't think you spent alot and she should have also.
Answer:
I love it when I get a steal like that. And if I lovingly get chastised by spending so much, I let them know I found a great deal on it (I do that when I've paid full price but knew they'd love it, too. One of the few times I lie.)
Answer:
I go by what people would want...if you can give a nicer gift...people will be ahppy you were able to find it on sale...just so they could get it
