Chemical Declutter

Ask:
Do you have a chemical in your life you would like to banish?

Caffeine? Nicotine? Chocolate

I am fed up with high fructose corn syrup. Why is it in everything? I've been reading labels intensely for 2.5 years, and believe me, it's in everything from bread to tomato soup. No wonder I have such a sweet tooth. I have read that it is supposed to make food taste better (sweeter) so we will eat more of it and buy more. Nice, huh?

Good post.

I thought you were going to talk about chemical cleaners ... I've got chocolate and caffeine clutter running through my system. I agree about the high fructose corn syrup. You are inspiring me here to give it up.
Answer:

I started reading labels about 6 months ago.......and it amazes me the amount of stuff in even simple things....a can of corn is surprising even when you really stop to think about it.

I try to make alot of stuff and really cut back on the pre made stuff.

We did have enough chochlate in our house to feed a small country. For some reason school, church, and family feel the need to send it home with us. We had a small rubbermaid tote FULL of it. To the point easter candy would not fit in the thing. I was at my wits end and dumped it in the kitchen garbage can. DS & DH were ok with it since we clearly never ate the stuff. There was halloween candy in there from 2 years ago in the bottom -- YUCK

Wow, great thread!
I have to agree with the high fructose corn syrup. It is in everything, and it shouldn't be.

My second chemical of choice I want to rid is all the artifical coloring that is also in everything.

I am trying to make as much as possible from scratch and use organic as much as possible.

It amazes how much things are sweetened that don't need to be. High fructose corn syrup, sugar, whatever. I was buying babyfood recently and they have fruit that has sugar added. Why does my baby need sweetened fruit??? Needless to say, I did not buy it.

Also, I gave up diet drinks when I became pregnant last year. My doctor's office advised that I should avoid artificial sweeteners because long term studies haven't been done to see what the effects on babies are. Besides that, I have read that because it is fake and so sweet that it makes your body crave more sweet things and can actually lead to eating more. No wonder people can't seem to lose weight.

Yep! I became very aware of this stuff (and threw it all out) after reading Fat Land. The only thing I knowingly eat it in is bbq sauce. (Note to self: buy non-hfcs at Whole Foods next trip...)

It drives me crazy when the kids drink it in Capri Sun / Hi-C type drinks at soccer games and parties... it's such BAD stuff!!!!

I thought you were talking about chemical cleaners or hazardous wastes at first, but you do have a good point. It is in everything.
